STOWE, Vt. — Sophomore
Drew Duffy continued his dominance on the slopes, winning his fourth race out of five thus far this season as Dartmouth concluded the first day of skiing at the Vermont Carnival in second place behind the host Catamounts, 510-469.
Duffy ripped through the course on the first run of the giant slalom at Mount Mansfield with the fastest time of 1:01.81 with junior
Kipling Weisel in fifth and
James Ferri 11th, though junior
Tanguy Nef fell and did not complete his run. In the afternoon, Duffy did just enough to edge out Vermont's Max Roeisland by 0.09 seconds with a combined time of 2:04.84, but the Catamounts managed to win the event by a single point, 119-118. Both Weisel (2:05.73) and Ferri (2:07.22) maintained their positions in fifth and 11th, respectively, to give the Big Green 118 points, just one behind Vermont.
The Catamounts swept the podium in the women's slalom, but Dartmouth claimed three of the next four spots led by
Claire Thomas. The sophomore was sitting ninth after the first run, but she put together a terrific second attempt to jump five place in the standings with a combined time of 2:11.84, just 0.15 seconds off the podium. Sophomore
Tricia Mangan made an even more dramatic jump, going from 17th after her first run all the way into fifth with a time of 2:12.01. The other scorer for the Big Green was junior
Stephanie Currie in seventh in 2:12.32. Francesca English beat out her teammate, Mille Graesdal, by a tenth of a second to take the gold in 2:09.38 as the Catamounts garnered 141 points to Dartmouth's 115.
Over at the Trapp Family Lodge, both the men and women raced without their top skier — senior Callan Deline and sophomore
Katharine Ogden. While Vermont took the top two spots in the men's race, Dartmouth put together one of its best races this year with sophomore
Adam Glueck finishing fifth with a time of 27:29.6. Senior
Gavin McEwen was a big part of the improvement, crossing the tape in ninth (28:01.7), and senior
Koby Gordon rounded out the scoring in 20th with a time of 28:48.1 as Dartmouth finished second overall in the event with 104 points, behind Vermont with 136. Catamount Bill Harmeyer took the top step of the podium in 25:51.0, nearly six seconds ahead of his teammate, Ben Ogden.
Even without Ogden, the Big Green won the women's 5K freestyle with five of their skiers bundled together between second and sixth place. Senior
Emily Hyde led the pack in 15:15.1, and freshman
Molly Gellert made herself known with her first career podium in third (15:18.2). It was junior
Abby Drach completing the Dartmouth scoring in fourth with a time of 15:22.0, but sophomore
Sofia Shomento (15:23.0) and junior
Lauren Jortberg (15:25.3) were right on her heels in fifth and sixth, respectively. Vermont's Evelina Sutro finished atop the podium in 14:42.0 as the Catamounts ended up second in the event with 114 points, well behind the Big Green's 132.
The carnival will conclude tomorrow morning with the slalom beginning at 9 a.m., and the mass classic races starting at 9:30 — 15K for the women, 20K for the men.
