HANOVER/LYME, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's and women's alpine teams picked up victories with two skiers stepping on the podium in the slalom today, but even with the slalom counting double following the postponement of the giant slalom yesterday, Vermont managed to win the Dartmouth Carnival by a single point, 914-913, thanks to wins in both Nordic races today.
Big Green junior
Tanguy Nef claimed the gold for the men on the slopes of the Thomas Trail at the Dartmouth Skiway, winning in impressive fashion with the fastest time on each run to beat out second-place Patrick McConville of Vermont by nearly two full seconds in 1:34.93. Joining Nef on the podium was sophomore
Kalle Wagner — his second career top-three finish — in 1:36.96, while senior
James Ferri wasn't far behind in fourth with a time of 1:37.21. Junior
David Domonoske (1:37.88, seventh) and freshman
Andrew Miller (1:38.57, 10th) joined them in the top 10, though their times did not contribute to the doubled team score of 270 points, well ahead of the Catamounts' 216.
The women nearly matched their male counterparts with the top three finishing second, third and fourth. Freshman
Ellie Curtis, making her collegiate debut, was fourth after her first run, then ripped off the fastest time on her second attempt to finish second with a combined time of 1:42.16, only 0.43 seconds behind Vermont's Paula Moltzan for the top step. Senior
Alexa Dlouhy completed the podium in third place in 1:42.56, while sophomore
Claire Thomas took fourth in 1:43.04. The Big Green also had junior
Stephanie Currie in the top 10 (seventh, 1:44.26) while the top three amassed 264 points, easily outdistancing Vermont with 216.
Over at Oak Hill, the cross country teams were competing in the 3x5K classical relay. The women kicked off at 10 a.m., and the trio of seniors
Lydia Blanchet and
Taryn Hunt-Smith, and junior
Lauren Jortberg made up the fastest Dartmouth team in second place with a time of 48:15.4. Only Catamounts Anna Bizyukova, Margie Freed and Lina Sutro managed to finish on top by a little more than seven seconds in 48:07.8 for the 116 points. The Big Green also had senior
Emily Hyde, junior
Leah Brams and sophomore
Katharine Ogden claim third a mere 2.8 seconds behind their teammates who scored 106 points for the team effort.
The men did not fare as well with senior
Gavin McEwen, sophomore
Adam Glueck and senior Callan Deline finishing 11th to earn 53 points. Vermont's Ben Ogden, Ian Moore and Matias Ovrum won by more than 20 seconds in 41:54.4 to help hold off the Big Green in the final team standings.
Dartmouth will next compete in the Middlebury Carnival weekend, plus will hold its giant slalom race for an unscored NCAA qualifying race.
