GREENVILLE, S.C. — Sophomore
Sam Ohno continued his consistent play to shoot even par in the third and final round of the Furman Invitational on Sunday, helping Dartmouth move up one spot in the team standings to ninth in the 21-team field. The Big Green completed the tournament with a score of 292-298-293—883 (+31), just two strokes behind 24th-ranked South Carolina-Aiken, while Coastal Carolina managed to hold off Davidson for the team title by four strokes with a 7-under 845.
Ohno, who made par on 29 of his first 36 holes, added 12 more pars to his ledger giving him a tournament-best 41 over the three rounds. But while he managed just one birdie in the first two days, he sank three today. He began his round on the eighth hole of the 6,984-yard, par-72 Furman University Golf Course and birdied the par-5 11th to drop to 1-under. After bogeys on 13 and 16, he recovered with a birdie on the 459-yard, par-4 17th and another on the 512-yard, par-2 second. A bogey on the fourth hole brought him back to even, and he parred the final three holes to post a 71 (E), rising 13 spots in the final standings to tie for 25th in the 120-player field with a 5-over 218.
Just one stroke behind him in the final standings was sophomore
James Turner, who was making his season debut after recovering from an injury, at 6-over par. He was 3-over after seven holes of play before dropping consecutive birdies on 14 and 15. Like Ohno, he also birdied the second hole as well and wrapped up his day with a 3-over 74, and his 11 birdies in the three rounds led all Dartmouth golfers.
Senior
John Lazor tied for 50th overall for carding a 73-74-75—222 (+9). Beginning on the seventh hole, he birdied the par-3 eighth and the second to highlight his round.
After Ohno, the best Big Green score of the day belonged to freshman
Mark Turner, James' younger brother, with a 2-over 73. He started strong with three pars and back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13, then added another on the sixth to complete the tournament at 77-78-73—228 (+15) in a tie for 85th.
Sophomore
Jason Liu had two birdies of his own during his final nine holes to finish strong. The team captain tied with the younger Turner in a tie for 85th with a line of 77-74-74—228 (+15).
Competing as an individual, freshman
Charles Petrie made par on 10 holes and birdied two others as he scored a 75 (+4) today and a 229 (+16) overall to tie for 88th while improving in each round.
Keller Harper of host Furman took home medalist honors with an 8-under 205 after tying the course record yesterday. But his title was not secured until he birdied the final hole to beat out another golfer in his group, Coastal Carolina's Wes Artac, who simply made par on 18.
Dartmouth will tee up again next weekend for a match play round with Brown on Friday and stroke play with the Bears and Cornell on Saturday at PGA National Estate Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
