HANOVER, N.H. –
Austin Meacham of the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team was one of thirty of the top NCAA men's lacrosse student-athletes to be selected as a candidate for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award on Monday.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
A native of West Harrison, New York, Meacham is serving as team captain during his senior season. An All-Ivy second team selection last season, Meacham played in all 13 games and made 10 starts. He scored his first collegiate marker in the game against Princeton on April 14. He was first on the team in caused turnovers (14) and second in ground balls (39) and went 15-for-42 at the X and was first in faceoff percentage (.357).
Off the field, he has cooked dinner for the homeless at the Haven (Fall 2015), taken part in a fitness challenge for cancer research, women empowerment and funding low cost outdoor adventures (Spring 2016 and 2018), biked in the Prouty 100-mile ride for cancer research (Summer 2017) and read to elementary school students (Winter 2018). He has also participated in the One Love Foundation talk about domestic violence (Fall 2018) and worked with a professor crafting a memoir on the experience of being black at Dartmouth (Fall 2017 and Winter 2018).
Meacham is just the fourth Dartmouth men's lacrosse player to be named a candidate for the award and the first since Kip Dooley '12 in 2012.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed down to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed in the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced in conjunction with the 2019 NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship in May.
