Dartmouth scored four runs in the fourth inning to get by the Big Red
ITHACA, N.Y. – Dartmouth used a four run fourth inning to defeat Cornell, 7-3, Sunday afternoon at Neimand-Robison Field. The series win marks the second time this season that the Big Green (8-24, 5-10 Ivy) have won two out of three against an Ivy League opponent. The Big Red (7-30, 3-12 Ivy) have only won one out their five three game conference sets.
Â
Heather Turner earned her second win in the circle in as many days by going 6.2 innings with three earned on eight hits and two strikeouts. Brooke Plonka threw the final four pitches and picked up the save.
Â
McKenna Gray went 3-4 at the plate with two RBI including a home run in the seventh inning. Micah Schroder finished 2-3 with two runs driven in. For the series, Schroder hit .875 (7-8) with two doubles and nine runs batted in, she had a .909 on base percentage and slugged 1.125. She raised her Ivy best batting average to .477 and extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
Â
With two outs in the second inning, Tessa Grossman tripled to the gap in right center, setting up Gray who drove Grossman home with a base hit to left. Cornell, who leads the Ivy League in home runs, tied the game at one in the third when Bridgette Rooney smacked a long ball to left.
Â
Dartmouth drew three walks with one out in the fourth to load the bases and took advantage. Almer singled to score Abby Shipley, Taylor Ward followed with a base knock to plate Morgan Ebow, and Schroder drilled the third straight single to bring in Calista Almer to extend the lead to 5-1.
Â
Shipley launched the first of two Dartmouth home runs with a lead-off solo shot in the fifth inning. Gray then blasted a two-out shot to left to make it a 7-1 Big Green lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Cornell made a late comeback attempt during its last half inning, but its two runs would not be enough as Plonka secured the final out.
Â
The Big Green are in Boston next for a midweek non-conference doubleheader at Boston University beginning at 2 p.m.Â
