KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Sophomore captain
Jason Liu carded a 73-70—143 (+1) over the first 36 holes of the Irish Creek Intercollegiate on Saturday, helping Dartmouth finish the day at 12-over par (580). Even with the solid play, the Big Green found themselves in 12th place in the strong 16-team field with UNC Greensboro leading the way at 11-under (557), one stroke ahead of Florida State.
Liu turned in a consistent first round with 14 pars and one birdie to shoot a 73 (+1) on the par-71, 7,099-yard course at The Club at Irish Creek. He then followed that up with five more birdies during the second round as the shaved three strokes to finish with a 70 (-1) to complete his day in a tie for 29th.
Two of Liu's teammates — sophomore
James Turner and senior
John Lazor — ended up just one stroke behind him at 2-over (144). Turner had the low round for the Big Green over the first 18 holes with four birdies and 11 pars for a 1-under 70 before a wild second round during which he had three more birdies and an eagle, yet shot a 3-over 74. Lazor, meanwhile, was even more consistent than Liu in the first round with 15 pars and a birdie while shooting a 72 (+1). He then matched that score with four birdies and 11 pars in round two.
Both sophomore
Sam Ohno and freshman
Mark Turner struggled a bit to start the day with each scoring a 78 (+7) on the first tour. But both settled in for the second round as Ohno posted a 72 (+1) thanks to a pair of birdies and 13 pars, and Turner was only one stroke behind Ohno with three birdies and a dozen pars.
UNC Greensboro's Bryce Hendrix had a near-perfect day with 12 birdies and just one bogey to storm to a five-stroke lead at 11-under par (131). John Pak of Florida State matched Hendrix' 12 birdies but suffered six bogeys for his 6-under 136, while Jack Lang of Davidson and Jamie Li of Florida State both entered the clubhouse with a 4-under 138.
The third and final round will begin on Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
