HANOVER, N.H. – A pair of sophomores collected both goals in Dartmouth's 2-1 win over Pittsburgh in the season opener on Burnham Field, Friday afternoon.Â
Tracey Mills got things started in the 39th minute andÂ
Izzy Glennon scored the game-winning goal in the 61st minute.
Â
The Big Green (1-0-0) controlled the pace throughout to hand the Panthers (2-1-0) their first loss of the early season. Dartmouth out shot Pittsburgh, 10-5, with a 4-3 advantage on goal and won the corner kick battle, 6-1.
Â
Dartmouth started the game with an aggressive mindset,
Allie Winstanley nearly began her Big Green career with a goal, but her shot in the second minute sailed over the top crossbar. After a couple corner kicks, the persistence paid off in the 39th minute when Mills got past a few defenders and fired a deep shot that found the back of the net to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Â
Pittsburgh came into the second half looking to quickly tie the score and did just that. In the 47th minute, the Panthers were awarded their only corner kick of the game and Juliana Vazquez set the ball perfectly for Amanda West, who netted her fifth goal of the season in three games, to tie things up.
Â
It did not take long for Dartmouth to take the lead for good. The Big Green went on the attack in the 61st minute and
Zoe Boocock found Glennon for the game winning goal.
Â
Dartmouth has a quick turnaround as they face another ACC opponent on Sunday. This time it's Syracuse at 1 p.m. on Burnham Field.
