The Big Green over powered the Orange for their first shutout of the year

HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth set the tone early in Sunday's contest against Syracuse and came away with a convincing 2-0 victory at Burnham Field. Allie Winstanley netted her first career goal in the ninth minute and Hayley Soriano sent home a wide-open score off a deflection in the 75th minute.

The Big Green improve to 2-0-0 with both victories over ACC opponents. The Orange suffer their first loss of the year and fall to 2-1-0. Dartmouth outshot Syracuse 9-5 and 4-2 on goal, the Big Green also dominated with seven corner kicks compared to one for the Orange. Mariel Gordon collected her first shutout of the year with two saves.

"This was a great weekend for the team going up and beating two ACC opponents," said head coach Ron Rainey. "We are looking forward to our trip in Florida and seeing how we can build off this good start."

Momentum shifted Dartmouth's way in the ninth minute when Soriano stole the ball and found Winstanley racing up the right side with one defender to beat. Winstanley played the ball to her right and fired a high shot that went over the keeper and in the net to make it 1-0 Big Green. The ball would stay with Dartmouth for the remainder of the half as the Orange only had one shot by the break.

Dartmouth had four shots to Syracuse's one over the first 25 minutes of the second half. The Big Green put the game away in the 75th minute. Charlotte Esty and Tracey Mills were both denied by the keeper, but Soriano came up with the deflection and buried a wide-open goal to extend the lead to 2-0. That was all the Big Green needed as time ran out.

Dartmouth will now look ahead to its trip to the Sunshine State. Their first test is Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton on Friday, Sept. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
