HANOVER, N.H. — After 14 years of service to Dartmouth Athletics, including two stints spanning 11 years as Dartmouth's head coach of women's rowing,
Wendy Bordeau is stepping down from her post.
Kelly Harris, who was Bordeau's top assistant the past two years, will serve as interim coach for the 2019-20 season. A national search will be conducted to fill the position for the 2020-21 campaign.
"I've been blessed to work with amazing athletes, inspiring coaches and wonderful colleagues during my time at Dartmouth," Bordeau said. "I especially want to thank Executive Associate Athletics Director
Brian Austin for his mentorship."
Â
Bordeau successfully built the women's crew to national prominence in her first nine years (2005-14) at the helm, leading the Big Green to three NCAA Championship appearances, beginning with the varsity eight in 2007. Two years later, she guided her team to another NCAA trip as the entire team qualified for the first time since 1998, then again in 2011. Prior to the creation of a separate Ivy League Championship, Bordeau had the varsity eight in the Grand Finals at Eastern Sprints four times in a five-year span (2007-11), finishing as high as third in 2011. Several rowers earned seats on United States, Canadian and British national teams, while dozens earned Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete awards under Bordeau's mentorship.
Â
From the fall of 2014 through the spring of 2017, Bordeau served as a senior associate athletics director for varsity sports as part of Director of Athletics and Recreation
Harry Sheehy's leadership team. She directly oversaw 10 varsity programs and acted as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Athletics during that time. Bordeau then returned to coach the women's rowing team in the fall of 2017.
Â
"We would like to thank Wendy for her years of service to Dartmouth Athletics and wish her the best in all her future endeavors," Dartmouth Director of Athletics and Recreation
Harry Sheehy said. "We are very pleased that
Kelly Harris has agreed to serve as interim head coach for the upcoming academic year, as this enables us to conduct a national search next spring during the optimal hiring season."
Harris has eight years of head coaching experience under her belt, beginning with a two-year stint at Marist as one of the youngest (26) Division I head coaches at the time. In both years she was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Coach of the Year for leading the Red Foxes to back-to-back MAAC championships in 2006 and 2007.
Â
Harris then spent six seasons helming the women's team at Marietta College, earning Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Coach of the Year honors three times, guiding the Pioneers varsity eight to back-to-back MARC Championships in 2011-12. The 2011 V8 crew received the school's first at-large bid to the NCAA DIII National Rowing Championships in a dozen years, and Marietta won its first team championship and earned its first-ever team bid to the NCAA Championships the very next year.
Â
In three years as an assistant coach at Bucknell (2013-16), she helped the 2016 second varsity eight to the program's first Patriot League Championship gold medal since 2011. Harris then spent a year as the student-athlete development assistant before coming to Dartmouth as Bordeau's assistant.
Â
"I look forward to leading Dartmouth women's rowing for the 2019-20 season, and am appreciative of this opportunity," said Harris. "We have a passionate group of returning student-athletes and an eager incoming class of 14 first-years who will all play a critical role in our success."
