Erin Kawakami scored for the Big Green in the 35th minute
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a battle of the top defensive teams in the Ivy League, it was Brown who came out victorious, 2-1, over Dartmouth Saturday night in the conference opener. Erin Kawakami nailed an equalizing goal in the 35th minute, but the Bears scored the game-winner in the second half.
Dartmouth (7-2-0, 0-1-0 Ivy) never took its foot off the gas pedal and played hard despite falling behind, while Brown (7-1-1, 1-0-0 Ivy) brought pressure early in each half and made the most out of its opportunities.
"Proud of how our team worked tonight and how we fought with valor and responded after going a goal down," said head coach Ron Rainey. "We had our moments and were unlucky to not get the tying goal in the second half against a great Brown team. Now we have to regroup and get ready for our home Ivy opener against Princeton."
Brown, who had its shutout streak of six games snapped in its previous contest, put an end to Dartmouth's five game clean sheet streak in the sixth minute. A Bears free kick from just past midfield ping-ponged in front of the goal and Abby Carchio launched a goal in the chaos to put the Bears on top, 1-0.
Dartmouth's first shot on goal evened the score in the 35th minute. Izzy Glennon touched it off to Kawakami who had space and ripped a long shot from outside the box to tie the game at 1-1. The Big Green owned the possession for the remainder of the half and had three more shots.
The Bears opened the second by launching the first nine shots of the half. Brown scored the game-winner in the 56th minute on the fourth shot of the nine. Sydney Cummings sent a corner kick and Ava Seelenfreund found Star White who made the score 2-1.
The Big Green responded by outshooting Brown, 5-0, over the final 24 minutes of the match but did not find the goal.
Dartmouth will regroup and prepare to host Princeton for its Ivy home opener at 1 p.m. on Saturday.  Â
