HANOVER, N.H. – Georgie McTear scored the lone goal of the game five minutes and 22 seconds into overtime to give UMass a 1-0 win Sunday at Chase Field against the Dartmouth field hockey team.
The Big Green drop to 0-2 on the season, while the Minutewomen even their record thanks to their second straight win over an Ivy League foes, beating Yale, 4-1, on Friday night in New Haven.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Isabella Santucci did everything she could to earn a win in her first career home start, making seven saves in nearly 66 minutes of action. But the big blast from McTear midway through the OT period was the only shot of the game from either side to beat a goalkeeper proved to be the difference.
"I was proud with how well our kids bounced back after Friday's game," head coach
Amy Fowler said. "We showed a lot of resilience and grit, and at times played very well. Defensively, our penalty corner unit stepped up and played more proactively, which was a huge improvement from our first game.
"The team knows we needed to create more scoring chances. We simply cannot win many games putting one of three shots on goal," Fowler continued. "That's a reality check for us; we need to be more threatening in our attacking end."
In addition to Santucci,
Sara Falkson made a diving save to stop a UMass goal on a corner play halfway through the second quarter. Last season, she was third in the Ivy League with five defensive saves with Sunday's marking her first of the 2019 campaign.
Dartmouth heads out on the road next weekend for a pair of games in the Bay State. The Big Green will play at Boston College on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m., before taking on Holy Cross Sunday at noon.
