HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey kicked off the New Year with a 4-0 victory over visiting Rensselaer on Friday evening.
Freshman netminder
Hannah Humphreys had her first collegiate shutout, making 14 saves to earn the win.
Senior
Bailee Brekke, and rookies
Catherine Trevors and
Celine Pietraszek all had two-point games. Also ending up on the scoresheet were senior
Christina Rombaut, sophomores
Katerina Dajia and
Lotti Odnoga, and freshman
CC Bowlby.
"I'm really proud of our girls tonight," head coach
Laura Schuler said. "It's nice to be able to start the second half of the season with a win under our belts. I think the effort was there from start to finish. One of our goals today was to be really consistent all over the ice, and the girls did a really nice job of that. It was also great to see Hannah get the shutout. The team did a really good job of helping her limit shots put up against us. It was a good effort by everyone."
With the Big Green already ahead in shots, Trevors opened scoring at 2:46 of the first. Though Pietraszek found the back of the net two minutes later, play continued for another minute before a video review confirmed the goal. Dartmouth (5-7-2, 2-4-2) kept trying to score another, eventually having to settle for a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
RPI (0-19-1, 0-9-0) looked stronger in the second period, hitting the post early and almost catching up in shots by the midway point. The Green turned the momentum around and had some nice chances but were unable to get past goalie Ena Nystrom until almost the last second. With 16.9 ticks to go, Bowlby scored, using a defender as a screen to make it a 3-0 game.
Unlike her wraparound goal that almost was not credited, there was no doubt that Pietraszek's one-timer at 2:27 of the third crossed the line, further increasing Dartmouth's lead. The Big Green had a 13-3 shot advantage in the final 20 minutes.
Dartmouth outshot RPI, 37-14. Neither team was able to score with the extra player.
The Big Green will be back at 3 p.m. on Saturday to face Union.
