HANOVER, N.H. — "Big Green Classic," live streams of Dartmouth fall sporting events from the recent past with commentary from some of the players and coaches, returns once again this week to bring you a thrilling game from Chase Field in 2017 when the field hockey team hosted Columbia. The event will be streamed Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. on the
Dartmouth Sports YouTube channel with alumna
Hailey Valerio '19 and current senior
Taylor Hantman '21 to discuss the contest and their Dartmouth experiences with host Brett Franklin.
The Big Green was wrapping up a three-game homestand and entered the contest with a record of 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the Ivy League. The Lions, meanwhile, were 7-6 and had won three of their four events in the Ancient Eight to sit jut a game behind undefeated Harvard and Princeton. Although Dartmouth had a 13-8 lead in the all-time series, Columbia had taken a 5-1 victory the previous year.
Valerio, a junior at the time who hailed from Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, was the starting goalkeeper that year, posting double-digit save totals in five separate games, including a dozen against the defending national champion, Delaware, and a season-high 13 against the nationally ranked Crimson. She played in 43 games in her career, starting 36, posted a 3.52 goals against average and a save percentage of .700 while making 312 saves (fifth all-time on the Big Green charts), 132 of which came in her senior campaign.
A 2019 All-Ivy League honorable mention and a team captain this year, Hantman was a freshman midfielder in this contest and participated in all 17 games during the season. Last year, the native of Cherry Hills, Colorado, led the Big Green with six assists and was hoping to add to her total of 10 career helpers this fall before the season was put on hold.
Be sure to tune in to the Dartmouth Sports YouTube channel on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. to watch the game play out and hear insight on the strategies and behind-the-scenes discussions.
