POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team had chances, but couldn't find the back of the net in a 4-0 loss on the road at No. 5 Clarkson Saturday night at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights (23-7-2, 16-4-0 ECAC) got a pair of goals from Haralds Egle, including the empty-netter with a minute and 54 seconds left in regulation.
The Big Green (12-11-4, 9-9-2 ECAC) trailed just 1-0 heading into the third period thanks to Egle's first of the night at 4:17 of the middle frame. Brian Hurley and Zach Tsekos gave the fifth-ranked Knights some breathing room with third-period tallies to push the lead to three.
Frank Marotte made 27 saves in the shutout, his fourth of the season.
Adrian Clark — who had a 1-0 shutout victory here last year – stopped 28 art the other end of the rink.
Saturday marked the first time all season the usually offensive Big Green were held without a goal.
Dartmouth thought they scored in a scrum during a third-period offensive surge, but upon review, there was not enough video evidence to overturn the no-goal call on the ice.
Rookie defenseman
Tanner Palocsik had the best opportunity of the night, but saw his one-time blast from the point ricochet off the crossbar and into the netting behind Marotte.
Drew O'Connor and
Will Graber combined for 10 shots on goal, including partial breaks for both, but to no avail. The Big Green blocked 13 Clarkson shots in the game, but the home team managed to get in the way of 16 from the sticks of the visitors.
The result leaves the Green and White in sixth place in the league standings with 20 points, one ahead of Colgate and two ahead of Yale. Rensselaer is three points up on Dartmouth for fifth place with a huge match-up to close out the regular season next Saturday at Thompson Arena.
Dartmouth will host Union and Rensselaer next weekend in the final two games of the regular season. Saturday's game against the Engineers will serve as Senior Night for the Big Green's nine-member Class of 2020.
