The Big Green had two strong performances in the circle
LONGWOOD, Fla. – Dartmouth softball split day two of The Spring Games against Western Michigan and Loyola Chicago thanks to a tremendous pitching performance in game one. After the day, the Big Green sit at 4-5, while the Broncos fall to 3-9 and the Ramblers improve to 10-4.
vs. Western Michigan:
Heather Turner threw a gem in her first start in the circle. The junior struck out two batters and forced 11 groundouts on her way to a complete-game for her first win of the season as the Big Green topped Western Michigan, 3-1, in the first game of the day.
Billie McFadyen was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Loghan Thomas crushed her first home run of the season, while Abby Shipley and Kate Farren also notched a hit.
After both sides were sat down in order in the first, Dartmouth picked up the first run of the day in the second. Shipley hit a one-out single and Farren doubled to score her all the way from first to make it 1-0 Big Green.
Thomas smashed a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning. Jade Bravo then reached on an error and advanced to second on a groundout. McFadyen then doubled Bravo home to extend the Dartmouth lead to 3-0.
That was enough as Turner continued to deal in the circle. Western Michigan scored its first run on a solo home run in the seventh, but Turner buckled down and forced three groundouts to finish things off.
vs. Loyola Chicago:
LU's Sydney Ruggles threw a complete-game shutout with five strikeouts, four walks and allowed only six Big Green hits. Both runs came on home runs as the Ramblers took down Dartmouth, 3-0, in game two.
Brooke Plonka did all she could for Dartmouth, the sophomore went the distance and struck out nine batters with three runs allowed on three hits.
Abby Shipley went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk, while Loghan Thomas also had a two-hit performance.
Nova Sinskul clobbered a two-run homer in the bottom of the second and Shannon McGee made it a 3-0 advantage with a solo shot in the fourth.
Dartmouth left eight runners on base, including four in scoring position.
