APALACHIN, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's golf team produced its best round in three years with a 4-under 284 at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational on Monday, yet the Big Green still ended up falling back one spot in the standings to conclude the two-round tournament in seventh place with a 579 (+3). Sophomore
Alex Gu carded a 3-under 69 on the day to lead the stellar Dartmouth showing.
Mount St. Mary's took home the team title by eight strokes, shooting 10-under par on the day to produce a two-round total of 562 (-14). Cornell matched that second-round score and rose three places in the final standings, but still came up three strokes short of second-place Colgate, which shot a 6-under 570.
Like his captain
Jason Liu did yesterday, Gu sank four birdies and suffered just one bogey over his 18 holes at the 7,159-yard, par-72 course at The Links at Hiawatha Landing. Paired with his 77 from the first round and Gu ended up tied for 23rd with a 2-over 146.
Liu, meanwhile, struggled during the front nine today before finding his game with a birdie on the ninth hole. The grad student added three more birdies on the back nine to climb back to 3-over (75) on the day and end the tournament at even par, tied for 17th.
But it was senior
Mark Turner who led the Big Green in the final individual standings at 2-under par (72-70—142), vaulting him into the top 10 in a tie for ninth. He matched Gu with four birdies today while posting a pair of bogeys in his solid performance.
Senior
Charles Petrie shaved five strokes off his first-round score, shooting even par today with a trio of birdies. His improvement allowed him to climb 15 spots in the standings into a tie for 38th. And freshman
Eli Kimche finished strong with three pars and three birdies over his final six holes to end the day with a 1-over 73 and finish one stroke behind Petrie at 6-over par (150) to tie for 44th.
Playing as an individual was freshman
Charlie Baker, who added one more birdie to the six he sank yesterday, eventually tying for 61st with a 154 (+10).
The Big Green men have one more tournament this fall in one week at the Columbia Autumn Invitational, which will be played on Oct. 11 at the Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston, New York.
Note: The last time Dartmouth scored as well as today came at the Firestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio on Oct. 1, 2018 with an identical 4-under 284.
