WEST POINT, N.Y. – Three years and two days ago, the Dartmouth women's rugby team won its first NIRA National Championship. And on a brisk winter's evening in New York, the Big Green did it again.
Playing their first night game ever, No. 1 Dartmouth defeated No. 3 Army West Point on the Black Knight's home turf, 28-18. This is the first time since going varsity in 2015 that Dartmouth has ended a season undefeated, going 9-0 in 2021.
Fifth year
Idia Ihensekhien was named MVP of the game for scoring two tries.
Abbey Savin hit all four of her conversions to finish closely behind with eight points.
"What an incredible experience," head coach
Katie Dowty said. "None of us will ever forget today's scene. We knew Army would be fierce and the stands would be packed, but we wouldn't have it any other way. This team deserved to show all they can do in front of a packed stadium and get such a hard-earned victory. Thanks to all of our Dartmouth fans who turned out in numbers to battle the home crowd. This is such a special, tight and talented group. A special shoutout to Idia, who has dominated the league for years and got a very well-deserved MVP nod today. What a way to cap off an undefeated season."
The Big Green opened scoring early, with
Emily Henrich getting the team's first try three minutes in. Add a conversion by Savin and the visitors were up, 7-0. Dartmouth tried hard to score again less than 10 minutes later, but Army wasn't having it, no matter how many times the Green tried. Perseverance paid off and Ihensekhien and Savin put an additional seven points on the board before a Black Knight penalty kick got them on the board, making it 14-3 with 17 minutes to go.
All was quiet for the remainder of the first half. Well, it was anything but. There just wasn't a change in score, but there was plenty of action. Possession changed multiple times. There were huge tackles on both sides. With zeroes on the clock, Dartmouth took that lead to the intermission.
Ihensekhien was back for more 10 minutes into the second and a third conversion by Savin increased the Big Green's lead (21-3). Around the halfway mark, Army added five points from its first try of the evening and, even though it looked like they scored again three minutes later, it was waved off. Fueled by that, the Black Knights scored for real three minutes after that, putting major pressure on Dartmouth (21-13).
After Army's 10-point run, the Big Green had to make some big moves. Three minutes after the Black Knight's latest,
Lilly Durbin evaded a handful of Army players after a huge run to put some distance between the teams. One more kick by Savin and we had a 28-13 game on our hands with 13:22 to play. The home team had two more pushes, breaking through on the second for their final try with 1:55 remaining. One more kick out of bounds and the game was done.
