CANTON, N.Y. – Dartmouth women's hockey rebounded from a loss to Clarkson the night before with a 6-2 win over St. Lawrence at Appleton Arena on Saturday afternoon, netting five goals in the third period.
This is the first time the Big Green have defeated the Saints since November of 2014 and the first time in Appleton Arena since 2011.
Eight players had at least a point, being led by
Currie Putrah with three (2-1-3).
Gabby Billing,
Catherine Trevors,
Tiffany Hill and
Sydney Herrington all had two points apiece. In net,
Maggie Emerson had a career-high 38 saves to pick up her second win of the season.
Although it was Dartmouth (2-3-0, 2-3-0) that had more quality chances and was leading in shots on goal, it was St. Lawrence (5-4-2, 2-2-0) that opened scoring at 14:43 of the first. That one-goal lead didn't last, as Putrah's one-timer over the goalie's right shoulder a mere 31 seconds later tied the score. After one period of action, shots on goal were even at 11.
All was quiet in the second period. Shots were low (10-6 in St. Lawrence's favor) and none tested the goalies. The third, however, was a different story.
Three goals in less than seven minutes turned the game around. Hill broke the tie 49 seconds in on the power play, Trevors netted her first of the year at 3:34 and Billing scored the team's first shorthanded tally of the season on the breakaway at 7:39, tripping and sliding into the boards while the puck found the back of the net. After a whirlwind of a few minutes, the Green had a 4-1 advantage.
Back-and-forth they went with no change to the score until St. Lawrence pulled its goalkeeper at 14:26. One attempt went wide, but the next one by
Jenna Donohue – her first collegiate tally – hit the mark with just under five minutes to go.
With 2:01 remaining, the Saints scored their second, this time on the power play. With their goalie pulled for the extra attacker yet again, Putrah was back for her second of the game just 13 seconds later.
The Big Green will be back on Tuesday when they host Vermont at 7 p.m.
