California Tour Comes to an End
• After two tough losses to Pac-12 teams, Dartmouth ends its three-game trip to the Golden State at Cal State Bakersfield.
• This road trip began with an overtime loss at Stanford, 89-78, followed by a six-point defeat at Cal on Sunday, 61-55, in which the Big Green were held to season lows in points and shooting percentage (.344).
• Dartmouth's leading scorer against the Golden Bears was
Cam Krystkowiak who tallied a career-high 20 points after entering the game averaging 5.5 points a game.
• The Cal defense did a number on the Green's players averaging double digits.
Brendan Barry,
Aaryn Rai and
Taurus Samuels combined for just 24 points while shooting 29.4 percent (10-of-34).
• Barry, 10th in the country in 3-pointers per game (3.7), was limited to just one triple in six attempts.
• Dartmouth as a team has done well protecting the ball with just 10.9 turnovers per game, including a season-low five against Cal.
• Dartmouth has won three games in the state of California — Stanford (1938), USC (1955) and Loyola Marymount (1999).
Series vs. CSU Bakersfield
• This is just the third meeting on the hardwood between these two programs, and the Roadrunners took the first two games in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
• The only player on either team to have played against the other is
Brendan Barry, who scored six points and fouled out in 21 minutes as a rookie in the 64-60 loss in Hanover, one of just two times in his career he has been disqualified.
• In the first encounter, CSUB rode a 19-point run in the second half then held off Dartmouth here in Bakersfield, 69-62.
Scouting the Roadrunners
• CSU Bakersfield has dropped its last two games after winning three in a row, with both games coming on the road at Abilene Christian (69-59) and Colorado (60-46).
• The Roadrunners have won all three of their games on their home court, two of which were against teams outside of Division I.
• The defense has been generally stingy, holding opponents to barely 40 percent from the floor while four of the last five teams have not scored more than 60 points.
• On the other end of the floor, CSUB is averaging 64.5 points a game and is shooting just under 30 percent from behind the arc.
• There isn't one Roadrunner scoring in double digits, though three are close — Kaleb Higgins (9.8), Justin McCall (9.5) and Justin Edler-Davis (9.5), the last of whom leads the team with 5.1 rebounds per outing.
• Edler-Davis has hit eight 3-pointers to lead the squad that hits just 4.0 treys per game, a total that only one team in Division I cannot match
• This is a good rebounding team with a margin of plus-2.7 per game, but they have a tendency to foul (more than 21 on average) with their opponents attempting 4.4 more free throws.
• Rod Barnes (Mississippi '88), the 2001 Naismith College Coach of the Year at Ole Miss, is 167-156 at CSU Bakersfield and 353-345 in his 23rd season as a Division I head coach. In 2015-16, he led the Roadrunners to a 24-9 record and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level, then won 25 games the next year.
Krystkowiak Katches Fire
Entering the game at California averaging 5.5 points a game, junior
Cam Krystkowiak got an early opportunity to come off the bench when
Nate Ogbu picked up two fouls in the first two minutes. The 6-9 forward proceeded to put up 20 points on 7-of-14 field goals and 3-of-5 from long range after hitting just 1-of-5 threes entering the game. He is the fourth Dartmouth player to tally 20 points in a game this year, joining
Brendan Barry,
Aaryn Rai and
Taurus Samuels.
Cal-lous Defense
The Big Green found the California defense to be a tough nut to crack as they were held to a season-low 34.4 percent field goal percentage in the 61-55 defeat. Dartmouth also had just six 3-pointers in the contest, tying for the fewest this season, but the team still ranks 25th nationally in triples made per game (10.0).
Free Throw Frenzy
Well, making 5-of-5 at Cal isn't exactly a frenzy, but notable for it was the second time this season Dartmouth converted every one of its free throws in a game. At Vermont, the Big Green made all 11 foul shots, which was the first time in 16 years they did not miss one in a game. Those 11 makes came in the middle of making 23 straight, a streak ended at the worst time — trailing by four with 2:02 left in overtime at FGCU. I don't know what the team record is for consecutive conversions at the line, but I do know that the 1993-94 Big Green went 24-of-24 against Brown to end the 1993-94 season.
