Dartmouthsports.com will be recognizing the senior student-athletes who had their spring seasons canceled or severely shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's Senior … Jason Liu, captain of the men's golf team.
DartmouthSports.com:Â What is your most memorable on-course team moment?
Jason Liu: My favorite team moment has to be the final day of the 2018 Ivy League Championship. We were sixth going into the last day and made the greatest charge I've ever been a part of. With our guys going low early, we clawed our way to finish second, and I'll never forget the exciting atmosphere at the end.
Â
DS.com: And your most memorable on-course individual moment?
JL: I've had quite a few personal memorable rounds and shots, but I think the one I'll be remembered for will be my railroad tracks moment during my freshman year at the event at Camden, South Carolina. Between two holes, a railroad track runs through that is marked off as out-of-bounds. I jokingly asked Coach Parker in the practice round if hitting over the tracks was still out-of-bounds, and he laughed it off saying it's not even in play. Of course, during my first round, I hit a horrible drive that ended up over the tracks. I found out that I was still in play and actually made a birdie on the hole, but what I'll always remember will be the look of disbelief that Coach Parker had when he walked up to my tee shot that went over the tracks.
Â
DS.com: Do you have a nickname on the team, and if so, how did you get it?Â
JL: My nickname on the team is Bird – short for Big Bird. Reed Russ '19 was the one who came up with it when I was freshman, and the name stuck.
Â
DS.com: Any hidden talents you can share?
JL:Â There was a point in my junior golf career when I couldn't hit a drive off a tee to save my life. So, I just grooved my driver off the deck (hitting driver off the ground, no tee) to scary consistency and accuracy.
Â
DS.com: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
JL:Â Considering how bad my short game is, I'd swap with
Sam Ohno just to feel what's it like to not have to worry about chunking or blading my wedges. It'd also be cool to see what playing lefty would be like.
Â
DS.com: What is your favorite place on campus?
JL: My favorite place has to be Hanover CC. Especially with our last home event being held there, the course really has quite a bit of sentimental value for me now, considering the countless hours of practice and rounds with the team I've had there. A close second is our indoor facility in Leverone. The simulator was our little getaway from the cold winters of Hanover, and I'll always cherish the late-night sessions with
Sam Ohno and
Charles Petrie.Â
Â
DS.com: What are your plans after Dartmouth?
JL:Â I'll actually be around for another year to work on my master of science at Thayer. With the Ivy League providing an extra year of eligibility, I'll most likely be able to play an extra year with the team, which I'm really looking forward to.
