Dartmouthsports.com will be recognizing the senior student-athletes who had their spring seasons postponed or altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today's senior … Donovan Spearman from Gardena, California, of the men's track & field team.
What is your favorite competition/athletic memory?
Donovan Spearman: My best on-field memory at my Dartmouth career has to be when I broke the Dartmouth record in the 200-meter dash during my sophomore year. I was sort of anticipating and hoping to break the record later in that season, but I was pleasantly surprised when it happened in my first race of that outdoor season. Shortly after doing that, Gerry Ashworth, who was an Olympian and Dartmouth track & field athlete and held the record before me, wrote me a very kind congratulatory letter which meant a lot.
Why did you choose Dartmouth?
DS: I chose to attend Dartmouth for many reasons including the strength of the academics, smaller undergraduate class size, the fact that it is so different and far from my home, and of course I loved the track & field athletes, coaches, and facilities.
What food could you eat every single day?
DS: It was hard for me to decide just one food, so I'll say my top two which are Takis and spaghetti. I can eat both of those all day, every day. (Cinnamon rolls deserve an honorable mention.)
If you could have played another sport, what would it be and why?
DS: If I could play another sport, it would definitely be either basketball or tennis. I love playing basketball and played competitively for a while, but tennis is my favorite sport to play and compete in. I picked up tennis about halfway through high school and had a lot of natural talent in the sport. I actually do think that if I would've focused on tennis more it possibly could've been my best sport.
Other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life?
DS: There have been a lot of family members, friends and coaches that have had influences on my life, but besides my parents, I would have to say my grandmother has had the greatest influence on my life. All throughout my childhood, I would go to her house after school and practice to do homework and eat dinner, which allowed us to become very close. I'm also her youngest grandchild and was able to spend a lot of time with her and learn a lot of things from her.
Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
DS: I'm passionate about healthcare and social impact, specific within underprivileged communities and areas. I participated in both of these fields while at Dartmouth and I hope to become even more involved after graduating.
Do you have a hidden talent?
DS: I'm sort of board game master. Growing up I often had family game nights, so I've gotten really good at board games over the years. From Connect Four to Monopoly, I'm pretty hard to beat.
