DAVIS, Calif. – The Dartmouth field hockey team opened their season with a come-from-behind victory at UC Davis on Friday afternoon at the Aggie Field Hockey facility.
Â
The Big Green won their season opener for the first time since 2012, when they defeated UMass, 3-1.
Â
UC Davis got on the scoreboard shortly before halftime off a goal from senior Madison Theodore. Theodore received the ball from the right flank and sunk her shot to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
Â
Dartmouth fought back during the second half, ultimately tying the game with just under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Sophomore
Bronwyn Bird intercepted a pass in the Aggie's defensive third, took it toward goal and fired a shot past the goaltender for her first collegiate goal and to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
The Big Green and the Aggies stood firm during the remainder of regulation and through both overtime periods.
Â
Sophomore
Rory Williamson got things going in the shootout as she stepped up and finessed her shot to the left corner. Junior
Hatley Post came up strong on the first UC Davis shot as she forced Lizzy Tedrow wide right.
Â
Bird extended the lead for Dartmouth in the shootout, 2-0. After UC Davis struck their third shot, freshman
Helen Young buried her shot to push the lead to 3-1. Post sealed the victory after she stuffed Milou Korthouwer's shot.
Post was exceptional for the Big Green as she and
Isabella Santucci combined for eight saves.
Â
Dartmouth returns to action on Sunday with a late-morning matchup at California.
