DARTMOUTH (4-9, 1-1)
at PENN (5-11, 2-1)
Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022 | 2 PM | ESPN+
The Palestra | Philadelphia, Pa.
Turning the Tide
• Dartmouth will search for it second straight victory (and third road win) on Saturday afternoon when it plays Penn in the Cathedral of College Basketball, the Palestra.
• The Big Green snapped an eight-game skid this past Saturday by smothering the visiting Brown Bears, 58-46, the fewest points they have allowed in a league game in seven years.
• Freshman
Ryan Cornish, making his first career start, provided a team-high 14 points.
• The sudden emergence of
Dame Adelekun proved important as the junior registered his first career double-double with 11 points and a personal-best 12 rebounds.
• Dartmouth nearly had teammates with double-doubles as
Garrison Wade also hauled in a career high in rebounds (11) while scoring nine points.
• Not many Division I teams rely on the 3-point shot as much as the Big Green with 44.3 percent of their points coming from behind the arc, fifth highest in the country. But they had only seven triples in the win over Brown (36.2 percent of the points).
•
Brendan Barry is Dartmouth's scoring leader for the season at 14.3 ppg with 47 3-pointers, most in the Ivy League, at a 41.2 percent clip.
• Overall as a team, Dartmouth ranks among the top teams nationally in 3-pointers made per game (9.8, 27th).
• The Big Green have also excelled at the charity stripe this year, hitting 76.1 percent of their free throws to lead the league, but have only attempted 10.9 per game, the second-lowest rate in Division I.
Series vs. Penn
• Dartmouth has played the Quakers 219 times with Penn sporting a record of 156-63.
• The Big Green snapped a five-game slide against Penn in the most recent meeting with a 66-59 win at Leede Arena on Feb. 21, 2020.
•
Aaryn Rai had a team-high 18 points in that win, while
Chris Knight and Trevon Ary-Turner each had 16 to provide the bulk of the scoring.
• Before that skid, Dartmouth won three straight in the series for the first time since 1958-59.
• Since the Palestra opened on Jan. 1, 1927, Dartmouth has posted a 19-74 record there against the Quakers, winning five of the last 61 in the arena (but three in the last 12 years).
Scouting the Quakers
• Penn had lost six straight prior to defeating Brown and Cornell to start Ivy play, then suffered a four-point loss to Columbia, all at home.
• Expect a fair number of 3-point shots to be attempted in this game as the Quakers rely on treys for nearly 40 percent of their scoring.
• Jordan Dingle is the focal point of the offense as he produces 19.0 ppg, second in the league.
• Keep an eye out for Clark Slajchert, younger brother of Dartmouth's Wes, who is second on the team with 9.5 ppg.
• Like Dartmouth, Penn has struggled on the boards, but Max Martz leads the team with 5.1 rebounds a game.
• Both Dingle and Jonah Charles are second in the league with 41 3-pointers, but Charles is the more accurate at 41.8 pecent.
• Steve Donahue (Ursinus '84) is in his seventh year guiding Penn with an 88-75 record. He also led Cornell to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and sports a 288-289 mark in 21 years as a D-I head coach.
Predicting a Long Win Streak
Being the math geek I am, discerning patterns in numbers is incredibly fun. For instance, the current pattern of wins and losses for the Big Green this season is lose one, then go on a winning streak that is double the previous streak (1) and add one — three straight wins. Next is a losing streak that doubles the previous streak (3) and adds two — eight straight losses. So now, if we double the previous streak (8) and add three, you can expect Dartmouth to enjoy a 19-game win streak. That would get the Green to the Final Four. Sounds about right.
Brother vs. Brother
Dartmouth guard
Wes Slajchert will get his first opportunity to play against his younger brother, Clark, in college on Saturday when the Big Green square off against the Quakers, appropriately in the City of Brotherly Love. They are one of 25 known sets of brothers playing in Division I this season, but one of only five sets that will play against each other. Wes has played in every game since arriving at Dartmouth, Clark's career is just starting as a sophomore, averaging 9.5 points a game.
Barry, Barry Close
Back on Dec. 8,
Brendan Barry joined an exclusive club by scoring his 1,000th point as a collegian, fittingly reaching the milestone with a 3-pointer against Quinnipiac. Now the graduate could very well become the 31st player to score 1,000 points in a Dartmouth uniform. He enters the game at Penn with 981 points in his Big Green career, meaning a 19-point effort would push him to the milestone. The last Dartmouth player to score 1,000? That would be
Chris Knight on Valentine's Day in 2020. If Barry wants to wait for a holiday like Knight did (on purpose I'm sure), he could simply hit the mark two days later on Martin Luther King Jr. Day when the Green host Harvard at Leede Arena.
There Is Nothing Like A Dame
Don't expect
Dame Adelekun to show up in a production of South Pacific anytime soon, but his performance against Brown was encore-worthy as he registered his first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Those 12 caroms were triple the amount he had ever had previously in a game and is one-third of his career total (36). And with his career-high points in the Ivy League opener at Cornell, 25 of his 43 career points have come in the last two games. Consider 2022 to be his Broadway debut, and he is bringing the house down.
Start Me Up
Freshman
Ryan Cornish missed the Ivy League opener, but he returned against Brown to make his first career start. All the rookie did was tally a team-high 14 points on 5-of-8 from the floor with two 3-pointers, and he was instrumental in jump-starting the offense, scoring seven of Dartmouth's first 10 points after falling behind 10-0 to start the night.
Ten-Spotting
While you shouldn't expect Ewan McGregor to show up at a game anytime soon, Dartmouth has taken an odd route to a pair of wins this season. As a matter of fact, both of these victories bookended the eight-game skid. At Bryant on Nov. 28 and against Brown on Jan. 8, the Big Green spotted the Bulldogs and Bears 10 points before denting the scoreboard themselves. Yet Dartmouth rallied in both contests to emerge victorious. I don't know if it is how Coach McLaughlin has drawn it up, but the saying is, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Board Meeting
Rebounding has generally not been one of Dartmouth's strengths this year, but the Big Green were very active on the glass against Brown on Jan. 8. All told, Dartmouth hauled in 43 rebounds, its most since Leap Day in 2020. Not only did
Dame Adelekun have a career-high 12 boards, but
Garrison Wade snared a personal-best 11 as well, the first time Dartmouth teammates have had double-digit rebounds in the same game since Dec. 21, 2019. The Green have collected more caroms than their opponent three times this season, and not coincidentally, they are 2-1 in those games.
Threes Coming in Tens
With 128 3-pointers through 13 games, Dartmouth ranks among the top 30 teams in Division I in 3-pointers made per game (9.8, 26th). In fact, the Big Green have made at least 10 in nine of those 13 contests, including a stretch of six straight games from Nov. 13 to Dec. 8, tying a program record. But against Brown, Dartmouth had "only" seven, winning for the first time this season without at least 10 trifectas.
