JEFFERSONVILLE/HUNTINGTON, Vt. — A day after winning her first collegiate race, Dartmouth freshman
Jasmine Drolet won her second, crossing the tape more than 15 seconds ahead of the field in the women's 5K classic on Saturday at the St. Michael's Carnival. The Big Green's top skier in each discipline was an underclassman as well, as the team finished second overall in the final team standings.
Vermont collected 984 points, winning five of the eight events, while Dartmouth edged out Middlebury for second place, 760-712.
Drolet continued to impress at Sleepy Hollow this weekend, ripping through the 5K course in 14:17.4 for her second gold in as many days. The Catamounts took the other two podium steps, however, to slip past the Big Green and win the event, 124-117. Another Dartmouth rookie , Nina Seeman, finished the race in sixth place (14:57.2), while senior
Callie Young narrowly missed out on a top-10 finish with a time of 15:25.2, good for 11th.
Like the women, the men's cross country team took second in the 5K, though Vermont swept the podium. Freshman
Luke Allan was the first skier hat wasn't a Catamount to cross the tape in fifth place (12:53.6), with junior
Cameron Wolfe not far behind in seventh (13:02.1). Rounding out the Big Green scoring times was freshman
Wally Magill in 13th place with a time of 13:17.8, allowing Dartmouth to finish well ahead of Middlebury, 107-94.
The Big Green alpine had a rougher go of things in the slalom at Smuggler's Notch. The men wrapped up the day in fourth place with 77 points, led by sophomore
Olof Hedelin in ninth place thanks to a scintillating second run that elevated him eight places from his first time down the mountain, posting a time of 1:34.81. Fifth-year senior
Kalle Wagner claimed 16th place in 1:35.24, while sophomore
Max Martin finished 20th overall in 1:35.97. Vermont took the top two steps on the podium, led by Joachim Lindstoel in 1:33.29, allowing the Catamounts to collect 132 points, 35 ahead of second-place Colby.
Sophomore
Olivia Holm earned a top-five finish with two strong runs for a combined time of 1:44.01, and fifth-year senior
Mikaela O'Brien took 17th overall in 1:47.52. Unfortunately for the women, two of the Big Green's other skiers did not finish their second run, and another failed to complete the course on the first try, leaving just the Holm and O'Brien to account for the team's total of 64 points, leaving them in sixth for the slalom. Middlebury's Lucia Bailey won the race (1:42.05) ahead of three Catamounts as UVM swept the events on the day and six of the eight over the weekend.
Speaking of Vermont, the Catamounts will host next weekend's carnival at Stowe and Craftsbury starting on Friday morning.
