CRAFTSBURY, Vt. — The Dartmouth men's and women's Nordic teams each both claimed spots on the podium on the first day of action at the Vermont Carnival today at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Senior
Callie Young took second in the women's sprint skate, while freshmen
Luke Allan and
Jasmine Drolet each finished third in their respective races, helping the Big Green end the day in second place in the team standings with 217 points, 41 behind the host Catamounts.
The giant slalom that was postponed until tomorrow has now been postponed indefinitely due to the snowstorm that left conditions unsafe for the competitors. Future dates for the GS and slalom have yet to be determined.
Drolet, who won both Nordic races two weeks ago in her collegiate debut, was impressive in the qualifying heat with the best time among the college field (the carnival is part of the Eastern Cup with a number of former Big Green skiers competing, including Katharine Ogden '21, Lauren Jortberg '20 and Erika Flowers '12). Young posted the third-best time in the qualifying heat, while seniors
Rena Schwartz and
Molly Gellert both managed to advance to the quarterfinals as well.
Drolet and Young both finished in their respective quarterfinal heats to advance to the semifinals (two of the only three collegians to do so) but came up short of the finals with Young placing fifth in her race and Drolet sixth to end up in second and third in the college standings, respectively. Schwartz finished ninth to provide points to the Big Green, and Gellert came in 12th. Vermont's Anna Bizyukova was the lone college skier to make it to the finals, ensuring she won the gold. Dartmouth and Vermont ended up tied in the team standings with 122 points apiece, sharing in the victory.
In the men's sprints, Allan was one of just nine college skiers to qualify for one of the 30 quarterfinal slots and the lone Big Green entrant. He proceeded to advance tot he semifinals by virtue of his second-place finish in the quarters (one of just three in the college pool) before placing sixth in his semifinal heat, ending his run but allowing him to take third. Junior
Cameron Wolfe narrowly missed out on making the quarterfinals and finished 12th overall, and freshman
Wally Magill also scored points for Dartmouth by ending up in 21st place.
Two Vermont skiers — Matias Oevrum and Gregory Burt — made it to the finals and took the top two steps on the podium, helping the Catamounts win the event with 136 points while the Big Green beat out New Hampshire for second place by a 95-82 margin.
The cross country teams will compete in the 10K classic tomorrow morning beginning with the women's individual start at 9:45 a.m.
Note: Ogden edged out former Big Green teammate Jortberg by 1.3 seconds for the gold in the women's sprint while Flowers placed eighth.
