ITHACA, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's hockey team tied #8 Cornell, 2-2, in ECAC Hockey action on Friday evening at Lynah Rink. The Big Green won the shootout, 2-1, to pick up the extra point in the standings.
Dartmouth goes to 3-12-3, 2-8-2 to while Cornell moves 13-4-2, 8-2-2.
Ian Pierce scored the opening goal, Dartmouth's eighth power play goal of the season.
Sam Hesler had one assist, making it three in the last four games.
Mark Gallant scored his seventh goal of the season, and first since November 28 against Vermont.
Sophomore
Clay Stevenson finished with 30 saves, including 16 in the third period.
The Big Green took advantage on their first power play opportunity of the evening. Midway through the first period, Cornell's Cody Haiskanen got called for a tripping minor to give Dartmouth a 5v4 advantage.
Joey Musa played the puck back to
Ian Pierce. Pierce's initial shot was saved but the rebound fell into his path, and he fired it home for his third goal of the season to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
Cornell found the equalizer with just under eight minutes remaining in the second period. Ondrej Psenicka played the puck back across the front of goal when Justin Ertel tapped it in to tie the game at 1-1.
After forcing a turnover, Pierce picked up his second point of the night when his shot was saved by Cornell goaltender Ian Shane, but Gallant stepped up to rip a shot into the empty net for his seventh goal of the season to put Dartmouth back on top, 2-1.
The Big Red were handed a lifeline when, after a lengthy review,
Sean Chisholm was given a five-minute major for charging with just over five minutes remaining in the third period, forcing the Big Green to play the remainder of the game down a man.
Halfway through the power play, Cornell tied things up when Jack Malone put one into the back of the net.
Regulation finished 2-2, forcing a 3v3 overtime. Neither team was able to find the winning goal in overtime, sending the game into a shootout.

Joey Musa scored on their attempts while Stevenson came up big to help the Big Green pick up the extra point in the ECAC Hockey standings.
Dartmouth will stay in New York and head to Hamilton for a matchup with Colgate tomorrow evening. That game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
