NEW YORK – The Dartmouth women's soccer team fell to Columbia, 1-0, in Ivy League action on Saturday evening at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
The Big Green move to 8-5-2, 1-3-1 while the Lions improve to 7-3-3, 3-1-1.
"It was a typical Ivy League battle," said Stacy and Nick Branca Family Head Coach of Women's Soccer
Ron Rainey. "Both teams worked hard, and I am proud of our effort."
Dartmouth's best chance of the night came early in the first half. In the 17
th minute,
Carly Retterer took the corner kick and played a perfect ball to the top of the six-yard box.
Aleena Seales timed it perfectly and headed the ball back across to the right side of the goal, but Columbia goalkeeper Paige Nurkin made an acrobatic save to keep it out of the net.
Columbia had a great opportunity to take the lead in the 68
th minute. Sophia Cavaliere had a great look towards goal, but the shot deflected off the post.
Jaidyn Curry came close to giving the Big Green in the lead in the 80
th minute.
Daisy Granholm, from just inside the Dartmouth half, played a through ball on the ground forward which was met by a 50/50 tackle between Curry and a Columbia defender. The deflection went towards goal and Curry chased it down, but Matei was quick off the line and got to it first.
The Lions scored the game-winning goal in the 86
th minute. A Columbia corner kick led to a loose ball in the box. Shira Cohen found a slight opening and was able to get a shot off that went past
Charlotte Cyr to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Rainey finished by saying, "I'm gutted for our program. But I believe this will motivate us as we get ready for senior day, homecoming and the 50
th anniversary [of Dartmouth Women's Athletics] celebration versus Harvard."
Dartmouth returns home on Saturday, October 29, for an Ivy League matchup for the final home game of the season. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet.
