OPENING THE SEASON
The Dartmouth men's hockey team opens the 2022-23 season this weekend with an ECAC Hockey and Ivy League game on Friday night against Harvard. The Big Green then head to Army West Point on Sunday for their first non-conference matchup of the season.
LOOKING BACK TO LAST SEASON
The Big Green finished the 2021-22 season with a 7-22-3, 5-15-2 record. As an #11 seed, Dartmouth fell to RPI in the opening round of the ECAC Hockey tournament. After the Big Green won game one of the three-game series, the Engineers won games two and three to advance to the next round.
The first win in the Cashman era came on November 5, 2021, when the Big Green defeated Colgate, 3-2, at Thompson Arena. The first road win of the year happened the following weekend in a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence.
The Big Green defeated Granite State foe UNH on opening night of the Ledyard Classic, 3-2.
Josh Waters scored twice, including a penalty shot, to lead Dartmouth to the victory. He was later named to the All-Tournament team.
Dartmouth picked up two critical points in the ECAC Hockey standings in a late January contest at #8 Cornell.
Ian Pierce and
Mark Gallant scored the goals for the Big Green, which ended in a 2-2 tie.
Nick Unruh and
Joey Musa scored in the ensuing shootout while
Clay Stevenson made key stops to earn Dartmouth an extra point.
Stevenson was named to the All-ECAC Hockey third team and rookie team after a stellar season between the pipes. Stevenson also earned All-Ivy League first team honors while
Harrison Markell was named to the Academic Team. Returners
Sean Chisholm and Pierce were named to the honorable mention team.
NEW FACES
Eight new players joined the mix ahead of the 2022-23 season. Cashman added seven freshmen in
Mikey Roberts,
Tucker McRae,
Cam MacDonald,
Cooper Flinton,
Luke Haymes,
Cooper Black and
Alex Krause. Joining the Big Green as well this season is sophomore
John Fusco, a transfer from Harvard.
Flinton and Fusco are both NHL draft picks. Flinton was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2021 NHL Draft while Fusco was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2020 NHL Draft. Both players joined with their respective teams for the development camps over the summer. Black also attended a camp as he was called into the Calgary Flames' development camp.
Krause made his mark over the summer as he represented team USA at the 21
st Maccabiah Games, where he helped guide them to a gold medal.
RETURNERS
Dartmouth returns 10 of their top 11 goal scorers, including leading scorer
Mark Gallant, who finished with 11 goals a season ago. The Big Green also return four players with double digit assists last season, led by Palocsik with 16. Chisholm finished his first year in the green and white with the most points, 23, after having nine goals and 14 assists.
PRESEASON TUNEUPS
The Big Green squared off with two Canadian schools during preseason. Dartmouth defeated McGill, 3-0, on October 12. MacDonald, Gallant and Chisholm each scored to give the Big Green a win in their first outing of the year. Dartmouth wrapped up preseason with a convincing 7-3 victory over Guelph.
Cam MacDonald led the way with a hat-trick and one assist while
Joey Musa,
Braiden Dorfman,
Matt Hubbarde and Flinton each scored.
SCOUTING HARVARD
The Crimson enter the weekend ranked #14 in the latest DCU/USCHO poll. Friday's game will be their season opener.
Harvard played two preseason games, picking up wins in both. The Crimson defeated Brown, 5-2, in a scrimmage before claiming a 9-0 victory in an exhibition. They had nine different goal scorers in the win over the Gryphons.
The Crimson were picked second in the ECAC Hockey Preseason Poll and had three players selected to the Preseason All-ECAC Hockey Team. Henry Thrun, Matthew Coronato and Alex Laferriere were the three honorees.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE CRIMSON
Harvard holds a 144-65-13 record in the all-time series. The first matchup between them happened over a century ago in February of 1907, which Harvard won. The Big Green picked up their first win over the Crimson in 1915 by a score of 4-2.
Recent history has favored Harvard, as Dartmouth is searching for its first win in the series since a 7-6 victory in overtime at Thompson Arena to start off the 2018-19 season. This is the fourth straight season in which the Big Green have squared off with the Crimson in the season opener.
SCOUTING ARMY WEST POINT
Army West Point enters the weekend with a 0-4-1, 0-2-0 AHA record. The Black Knights host American International College in an Atlantic Hockey matchup on Friday evening.
Joey Baez leads the Black Knights in scoring through the opening five game with four goals. Brett Abdelnour and Michael Sacco each have two. Anthony Firriolo and Max Itagaki each have four assists while Abdelnour has three. Noah Wilson has a team-high 17 blocked shots.
Gavin Abric has handled the goaltending duties so far this season playing every minute, making 130 saves while allowing 17 goals for a save percentage of .884.
The Black Knights opened its season against ECAC Hockey foe Union on October 2, playing to a 2-2 draw. Army West Point took a 2-1 lead in the third period before the Dutchmen equalized five minutes later.
Their most recent game was an exhibition against the United States National Team Development Program. USA took the win, 7-6, in overtime. The Black Knights scored twice in the final two minutes to tie the game and send it to overtime. Prior to that, they fell, 3-1, to UNH in Durham.
The Black Knights are coached by Brian Riley, who is in his 19
th season as head coach. He is a four-time Atlantic Hockey Association Coach of the Year.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE BLACK KNIGHTS
The Big Green have a 46-10-6 record all-time against the Black Knights. The series dates back to February 3, 1914, when Dartmouth defeated Army West Point, 7-3
The last time the two teams played each other was in the 30
th Ledyard Classic during the 2018-19 season. Dartmouth secured a 5-2 come-from-behind win with five different goal scorers.
