HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth sailing hit the waters for its fourth week of the 2022-23 season at three regattas this past weekend. The Big Green continued to improve on their performances from last week to register solid finishes at each event.
Â
Four student athletes took part in the first round of the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship event, hosted by Brown.
Maddie Hawkins and
Aisling Sullivan set sail in the "A" division, while
Gray Hemans and
Caroline Oyster competed in the "B" division.
Â
Hawkins and Sullivan placed second in a field of 18 teams in their division, while Hemans and Oyster took fourth in "B" division. The Big Green took third at the regatta and will move on to the second round of the Atlantic Coast Championship.
Â
In open competition, Dartmouth competed at the Danmark Trophy event, hosted by the Coast Guard.
Boyd Bragg,
Yumi Yoshiyasu and
Christopher Long took fifth place in "A" division, while
Will Michels,
Reese Bragg and
Ryan Goldstein took sixth in the field of 19 programs.
Â
Dartmouth closed out the event in fourth place, behind only Brown, Harvard and the Coast Guard. The Big Green improved on their finish from last year at this event, as the program finished sixth at the 2021 installment.
Â
"We were thrilled to have strong performances at a trio of regattas this weekend," head coach
Justin Assad said. "The Women's Atlantic Coast round one is our first test against the whole country in women's sailing and we are excited with the outcome. In the open, the Danmark Trophy is also the first big test and we're happy with where we are."
Â
Oliver Hurwitz and
Drew Clutterbuck picked up a victory in the "A" division at the George Warren Smith Trophy event. The pair bested 19 other teams in the division to lead the Big Green at the regatta, which was hosted by MIT.
Â
"The Smith Trophy was a great opportunity to gain and refine experience on our team," Assad said. "We're pumped for Oliver and Drew who came away with the A Division win, and for the other sailors who had a strong weekend."
Â
The Big Green set sail once again this weekend at four regattas hosted by Connecticut College, Bowdoin, Salve Regina and St. Mary's College.
