HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth sailing team closed out its fall regular season over the weekend with a pair of events. The Big Green dominated the New England Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association fall championship weekend with strong finishes in women's and open competition.
Dartmouth took a first-place finish at the Victorian Urn Trophy regatta, the NEISA conference championship event. The Big Green was represented by
Maddie Hawkins and
Aisling Sullivan in the "A" division, while
Gray Hemans and
Caroline Oyster set sail in "B" division.
Hawkins and Sullivan dominated their division, finishing 24 points ahead of the second-place duo from MIT. Hemans and Oyster also performed well, clinching a third-place finish behind teams from Boston College and Yale.
Dartmouth's win at the Victorian Urn Trophy regatta sealed a NEISA Women's Fall Championship for the program, its first since 2012. The Big Green's win also sealed a first-place finish for the fourth consecutive week.
"We are thrilled to win the Victorian Urn Trophy for the first time since 2012, with a big division win by
Maddie Hawkins and
Aisling Sullivan," head coach
Justin Assad said.
In open competition, the Big Green participated in the NEISA conference championship regatta, the Schell Trophy event. Dartmouth finished third in a field of 18 programs behind only Yale and Harvard.
In the "A" division,
Boyd Bragg and
Yumi Yoshiyasu finished just four points behind the second-place team from Harvard.
Will Michels and
Reese Bragg took fourth place in "B" division action to seal another strong finish for the Big Green.
"Our open team was in the fight to win the Schell Trophy," Assad said. "We finished strong with a third-place finish. This is a fantastic end to the regular season and leaves us very excited for the spring championship season."
Dartmouth will look to build off a strong fall season when the spring championship regattas begin in 2023.
Sarah Young is set to compete at the 2022 ICSA Fall Championships in Norfolk, Virginia next weekend. Young will compete in the women's singlehanded national championships for the Janet Lutz Trophy.
