HANOVER, N.H. — Sarah Young of the Dartmouth sailing team competed at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Women's Singlehanded National Championships. Young competed at the event for the second straight year and finished fourth in a field of 19 of the best student-athletes in the country.
Young, who was the first Dartmouth sailor to compete for the Janet Lutz Trophy last fall since 2005, improved eight positions from her finish at the 2021 competition. The sophomore was selected for the event as one of 13 at-large competitors following a strong performance at the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship regatta earlier this season.
"We are thrilled to have Sarah finish fourth at the National Singlehanded Championship, out of 19 competitors," head coach
Justin Assad said. "This is a major improvement on her 12
th-place finish last fall, and she has her hard work, positive attitude and overall effort to thank for that improvement."
Young was one of five Ivy League student-athletes to participate at the ICSA National Championships. She outraced competitors Brown and Cornell and finished only behind Sophia Montgomery from Harvard who took first at the event.
"Sarah will be an important part of our doublehanded women's team this spring," Assad said. "For now, we can be proud of how she represented Dartmouth at just our second appearance at the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship since 2005.
The sailing team will kick off the championship season in the spring of 2023.
