HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth sailing team opened its spring schedule with a pair of regattas over the weekend. The Big Green took part in the Sharpe Trophy Team Race and Thames River Team Race to kick off the championship portion of their schedule.
Both regattas were shortened to one day of racing, as severe conditions on Saturday limited the events to Sunday. The Big Green finished fourth in a field of eight teams at Thames River, hosted by Connecticut College and fifth at the Sharpe Trophy Race, hosted by Brown.
The Big Green opened the Thames River Race strong, picking up five wins in seven races in round one of the regatta. Dartmouth recorded wins over Tufts, Vermont, Roger Williams, Yale and host-team Connecticut College to advance to the Top 4 round of the event.
Dartmouth closed out the regattas as the only team to defeat the eventual winner, Roger Williams. The Big Green were represented by skippers
Gray Hemans,
Nick Hurley,
Bella Casaretto and
Oliver Hurwitz and crews
Phoebe Lee,
Maddie Hughes,
Sudi Zhao and
Madeleine Regulla.
At the Sharpe Trophy regatta, the Big Green won three of seven races, picking up wins over MIT, Northeastern and Salve Regina. Dartmouth finished just outside the final four, dropping out of the final round due to a tiebreaker against Tufts.
Boyd Bragg,
James Paul and
Will Michels served as skippers, while
Eliza Crocker,
Christopher Long,
Drew Clutterbuck,
Reese Bragg and
Alexandra Pierce were the crews for the regatta.
"This weekend was a great opportunity to shake off the rust and get ready for the season," head coach
Justin Assad said. "Given that we haven't practiced, we just focused on getting in good practice reps and refreshing our team racing brains. We are excited to work on the areas we have identified for improvement on spring break."
Dartmouth is back in action from March 25-26 at four regattas. The Big Green will take part in the Admiral Moore Team Race, Boston University Team Race, Navy Women's Team Race and Central 2 event.
