LOWELL, Mass. — The Dartmouth men's hockey team fell to #14 UMass Lowell, 6-3, in a thrilling contest at the Tsongas Center on Saturday evening in their non-conference finale.
Dartmouth falls to 3-16-3, while UMass Lowell improves to 16-6-3.
Braiden Dorfman was involved in all three Dartmouth goals with one goal and two assists.
Tanner Palocsik scored one goal and had one assist while
Jack Cameron finished with two assists.
Clay Stevenson finished the night with 41 saves.
The Big Green jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period.
Jack Cameron controlled the puck and played it to
Harrison Markell behind the Dartmouth goal. Markell made a great pass along the boards to Dorfman who took the puck towards goal and fired it top shelf for his fourth goal of the season to put Dartmouth up 1-0.
The River Hawks tied it up with just over five minutes remaining in the first period. Andre Lee's initial shot was saved by
Clay Stevenson, but the rebound fell to Brian Chambers in front of the net for the tap in.
UMass Lowell took the lead with two and a half minutes left in the opening period. Sam Knoblauch played the puck across the face of goal to Connor Sodergren, who was able to get it past Stevenson to give the River Hawks the 2-1 lead.
Stevenson finished the opening frame with 23 saves, his most in a single period in a Big Green uniform.
Midway through the second period, the River Hawks added to their lead. After winning a faceoff in the Dartmouth defensive zone, UMass Lowell fired a shot towards goal that was saved by Stevenson. The rebound made its way to Sodergren who was able to put it home for his second goal of the game.
The Big Green cut into the deficit with three minutes remaining in the second period.
Tanner Palocsik played a puck up the middle to
Sean Chisholm just before he crossed the blueline. Chisholm skated towards goal before calmly shooting it past UMass Lowell goaltender Owen Savory to make it a one goal game with his fifth of the season.
UMass Lowell scored a power play goal with six minutes remaining in the third period. After
Joey Musa was called for faceoff interference, the River Hawks piled on the pressure and scored with five seconds remaining in the power play.
Dartmouth answered immediately, scoring twenty seconds later. Dorfman played the puck from behind the River Hawks' net to Palocsik, who controlled it and ripped a shot through the defense and into the back of the goal.
The River Hawks responded less than a minute later when Zach Kaiser found himself in a great position in front of goal and was able to get one past Stevenson.
Looking cut into the deficit, the Big Green pulled Stevenson to go with the extra forward. UMass Lowell took advantage and scored an empty net goal with 1:15 remaining to seal the win.
Dartmouth returns to Thompson Arena next weekend as they host Brown on Friday followed by Yale on Saturday night for ECAC Hockey and Ivy League action.
