HANOVER, N.H. — With two days before the Ivy League Women's Golf Championship tees off at The Ridge at Back Brook in Ringoes, New Jersey, Dartmouth is playing its best golf of the season with the goal of winning its first-ever conference crown.
"This is just about anyone's title this year," said
Alex Kirk, the Carolyn A. Pelzel '54a Head Coach of Women's Golf. "Any one of the six teams are capable of playing well enough to win this event. That certainly includes us, and our players are all in a good place physically and mentally, playing some of their best golf right now."
Kirk is not exaggerating about his squad. His core five were not able to play together as a group all season until mid-March, and it showed in the tournament results. At the Bama Beach Bash during spring break, the Big Green finished third with junior
Samantha Yao taking home medalist honors (while breaking the program record for lowest score in a round — 3-under par) and sophomore teammate
Katherine Sung tying for second.
Two weeks later, Dartmouth won the Prospect Bay Intercollegiate with Sung tying for the individual lead and senior
Kristen Chen tying for sixth, the first top-10 finish of her career. All five Big Green players finished in the top 25.
Yao owns the team's best stroke average on the season (75.36) while Sung is not far behind (75.47). Sophomore
Penelope Tir and freshman
Claire Xu have identical averages at 78.74 while Chen is at 79.91 over 11 rounds after not playing in the fall.
The six Ivy League teams will have a practice round on Thursday before the first round begins on Friday at 9 a.m. The second round on Saturday will tee off starting at noon, while Sunday's third and final round will begin at 9 a.m.
