FAIRLEE, Vt. — Despite brilliant sunshine and moderate temperatures today, brisk winds and increasing cross tailwind conditions limited the number of races competed on Lake Morey this morning. But the Dartmouth varsity 8 heavyweights were able to get their race in, beating sixth-ranked Syracuse by a mere second to take home the Packard Cup. The fifth-ranked Big Green came out on top with a time of 5:40.0 with the Orange following at 5:41.0.
Both Big Green boats got out to early leads with the varsity at nine seats and the 2V at 6-7 seats 750 in. Both managed to lead wire-to-wire for the final times.
The second varsity had to go from a floating start because the stakeboats couldn't hold in the wind. Despite the rough start, they were able to finish with the Big Green coming ahead of Syracuse with their time of 5:38.5, just ahead of the visitors who finished with a time of 5:39.2.
"It was good, competitive racing from both schools in challenging conditions. Syracuse and Dartmouth seem to bring out the best in each other, and this year's Packard Cup race was no exception." said the Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing
Wyatt Allen.
Coaches decided to call it a day and pushed the 3V, 4V and 5V to Sunday morning. Racing on Sunday will begin at the following times:
• 1V — 8:00 a.m.
• 2V — 8:20 a.m.
• 3V — 8:40 a.m.
• 4V and 5V — 9:00 a.m.
