Heavyweight Rowing Pushes Elite Field; Finishes Fourth Collegiately At The Head of The Charles

BOSTON — The Dartmouth heavyweight rowing team raced four eights at the 61st Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend. The headline came Sunday, when the varsity eight led world champion Holland Acht for more than 11 minutes in the men's championship eights before crossing the line less than a second behind the Dutch.

"I'm proud of the way our group raced and thought it was a very good weekend for the team," head coach Wyatt Allen said. "We had a lot of lineup changes, particularly in our second Champ 8+ and two Club 8+ entries leading into the regatta, and I thought all three crews rallied around that and competed hard the whole way down the course."

The varsity eight was the fastest crew in the field to the Cambridge Boat Club checkpoint and was two seconds ahead of Holland Acht on raw time entering the final 750 meters. The Big Green crossed in 13:33.609, the third-fastest time on the water, finishing 0.774 seconds behind the Dutch (13:32.835) and 0.216 seconds behind Harvard (13:33.393). A five-second buoy penalty moved Dartmouth to sixth in the final standings in a race where the top 10 crews finished within 10 seconds of one another.

"Our top lineup laid it all out there Sunday afternoon," Allen said. "To be leading a field of that caliber through the last time checkpoint was awesome and provides fuel for the fire and significant momentum going into the winter."

The second varsity eight finished 25th out of 37 crews in the championship eights with a time of 14:02.895.

On Saturday, Dartmouth raced two crews in the men's club eights. The A boat finished fifth out of 32 crews with a time of 15:14.162, and the B boat placed 12th with a time of 15:49.940.
