CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Dartmouth softball team fell to Harvard, 4-3, in eight innings in the rubber match of the three-game Ivy League series on Sunday afternoon at Soldiers Field.
Â
The Big Green move to 18-23, 12-6 while Harvard improves to 19-17, 13-5.
Â
Billie McFadyen led the Big Green at the plate, going 2-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Maria Angelino and
Alaana Panu each had one hit and one stolen base.
Brooke Plonka and
Megan Hagge combined for five strikeouts on the mound.
Â
Ella Lee had three hits, including one double, and two runs for Harvard. Madi Mays and Kaitlin Lampson each finished with two hits while Mays had two RBI and Lampson had one. Anna Reed went the distance for the Crimson as she pitched all eight innings and finished with five strikeouts and eight hits allowed.
Â
The Big Green got off to a strong start as they opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. McFadyen and Panu hit singles early in the inning to get on first and second. With two outs,
Leila Hennessy hit a ball on the ground to the second baseman, who had trouble fielding it and it allowed McFadyen to score from second to get Dartmouth on the board.
Â
Plonka made light work of Harvard's first trip up to the plate, as she only allowed a single and struck out two. Heading to the second, Dartmouth added two more. Facing two outs in the inning and with runners on first and second, McFadyen launched a deep ball out to right field that scored both
Jenna Brown and Angelino and gave McFadyen her third triple of the season.
Â
Harvard tied the game at 3-3 in the third. The Crimson scored their first run on a passed ball, and with two runners in scoring position, Madi Mays hit a two-run single to right field to tie things up.
Â
Hagge came in to pitch for the Big Green to start off the inning and only allowed one hit through her first three innings, retiring seven straight Crimson batters at one point.
Â
The Big Green started well in the eighth, retiring the first two batters. Ella Lee kept the inning alive when she doubled to left field. On the next at-bat, Lampson hit one to second base, but beat out the throw that would have ended the inning, allowing Lee to score from second to give the Crimson the walk-off win to take the series, 2-1.
Â
With the win, Harvard moves into sole possession of second place in the Ivy League standings.
Â
The Big Green return to Dartmouth Softball Park this weekend for a crucial three-game series against the Cornell Big Red.
Â
Notes: With Princeton already claiming a share of the regular season title and a spot in the Ivy League Championship Series, Harvard will claim the other spot if they can take two-out-of-three against Cornell in their midweek series on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, if the Big Red win two, then Dartmouth can advance to the Ivy League Championship Series with a three-game sweep of Cornell next weekend.
