Â
Both teams had the opportunity to score in the opening inning as they each had a runner in scoring position, but neither team was able to find the breakthrough. Defense was the story of the game for the first four innings as both teams kept things even.
Â
Cornell was on the verge of opening in the scoring in the top of the fifth. After putting runners on first and second, Allison Kerce hit an infielder single, Kate Ferran made the throw to home as Ruby Sugayan attempted to score from second and the throw was right into the glove of Dartmouth catcher
Mary Beth Cahalan to make the tag and end the inning without allowing the run.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Jenna Brown and
Emily Lipsett reached third and second, respectively, just as McFadyen, the team leader in batting average, was at the plate. McFadyen smashed one into center field that made its way to the fence, sending Brown and Lipsett across the plate, and a stand-up triple for McFadyen.
Â
The Big Red almost responded in the sixth as they got a runner to third with just one out. Hagge and the Big Green defense forced a ground out to third and a pop up in foul territory to hold onto the shutout and ultimately, the win.

Â
Cornell opened things up by scoring two in the first inning. With runners on first and second, Maicie Levitt singled through the right side to give the Big Red their first run of the afternoon. On the next at-bat, Muniz singled up the middle to add another run.
Â
The Big Red added to their lead in the third when Crist led off with a home run to center field. Dartmouth answered in the bottom half of the inning. Panu hit a double to deep left field with two outs in the inning. On the next at-bat, Farren added a double of her own, sending Panu across the plate to cut into the deficit.
Â
Hagge came in to pitch to start the fourth. After allowing a walk with one out, Hagge did not allow another baserunner for the Big Red as she retired the next 11 batters. The Big Green's closest chance to scoring again came in the sixth as they had runners on first and third but were unable to get either home.
Â
Dartmouth and Cornell will be back in action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at Dartmouth Softball Park to close out the season.
