FAIRLEE, Vt. — On a beautiful, warm, sunny day in Vermont, the men's heavyweight team doubled up on cups while Syracuse also earned a cup by beating Boston University.
The Big Green were down a couple of seats off the start before working their way through and continuing to move away in the second thousand. Dartmouth finished first (5:46.4) to claim the Bill Cup followed by Syracuse (5:51.6) and Boston University. In a race-within-a-race, the Orange claimed the Conlan Cup, which they contest with the Terriers annually.
Racing on flat water with calm to a light variable tailwind, the Big Green picked up victories in the 2nd Varsity, 3rd Varsity and the 4V/5V race.
Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing Wyatt Allan was pleased with the weekend's results. "Great day of racing on Lake Morey. It was a very solid team day, top to bottom for our group, and a performance we need to build off of as we prepare for Eastern Sprints in two weeks. Thanks to Syracuse and BU for making the trip to Fairlee and to the Lake Morey Resort for a great weekend of racing."
In 1941, Edwin Lyman Bill of Rutgers placed in competition a cup bearing his name. After two races, both won by Rutgers, war interrupted the series, which was reactivated in 1964 at the urging of Rutgers crew coach Bill Leavitt. The race has always been rowed at 2000 meters. Boston University has been an entrant in each of the 26 races and American International College participated in 1942. The Terriers came out on top the last time the race was run in 2019 before the pandemic. Dartmouth won two straight in 2017-2018.
