Heavyweights Bring Home Five Medals from Eastern Sprints

Big Green finished third overall behind Yale and Brown
WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS — The third-ranked Big Green heavyweight rowing team matched its ranking and finished third overall at the Eastern Sprints this afternoon behind Yale and Brown. After qualifying six boats for the competition, Dartmouth came home with five medals, including the gold by the fifth varsity eight.
The afternoon started out with the 6V boat downing two Ivy rivals, Harvard and Yale, finishing second only to Navy. The 5V boat (6:17.018), however, managed to come away with the gold, narrowly edging out Harvard (6:17.043). In the 4V race, Harvard returned the favor by a little more than two seconds 5:59.367 to 6:01.377, leaving the Big Green with their second silver.
In the 3V race, Yale showed why they have won six straight Eastern Sprints, dominating the race in 5:52.410. Dartmouth finished fourth with a time of 6:01.145.
The first bronze medal of the day game from the second varsity, coxed by Conor Shaheen (Kensington, Maryland) with Yale (5:48.501) edging out Brown (5:49.311), which finished a hair ahead of the Big Green (5:49.719).
Not to be outdone, the varsity eight won their own bronze medal, trailing Yale and Brown but finishing ahead of Princeton, Harvard and Syracuse to wrap up the day's races. With Sammy Houdaigui (McLean, Virginia) at coxswain and William Bender (Norwich, Vermont) at stroke, the Green finished in 6:01.304; Yale took the gold in 5:58.010.
Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Heavyweight Rowing Wyatt Allen is looking toward the next race. "I'm proud of the way our team raced today. It was a great team day with strong performances top to bottom. We now need to take advantage of the next two-and-a-half weeks to continue building toward the National Championship in early June."
Next up for the Big Green is the IRA Championships at Lake Mercer in Princeton, New Jersey, on June 3-5.
