The Big Green had a strong day of racing across the board
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — At the end of the first day of the IRA Championship on a mostly cloudy day on Lake Mercer, the Dartmouth men's heavyweights advanced all four boats to the semifinals on Saturday.Â
The Big Green Varsity 8 boat stroked by sophomore William Bender (Norwich, Vt.) was moved to lane 2 due to an increase in wind and rain. The University of Washington (5:37.90) led the entire way while the Big Green (5:41.58) held off a determined BU (5:51.50) squad to take second and advance to the AB semifinals that will kick off at 8:50 a.m. tomorrow.
Â
The 2V8 got off to a great start and never relinquished the lead over Brown, just two weeks after the Bears won the battle at the Eastern Sprints. This time, Dartmouth turned the tables, coming out on top and advancing to the semis tomorrow at 9:10 a.m.
Â
The 3V8 boat also led wire-to-wire on the way to beating Washington for the top spot and will race in the semis at 9:30 a.m.
Â
For the Big Green's final race, the Varsity 4+ competed in a time trial in the morning, placing seventh out of the 25 overall boats to qualify for the afternoon semifinals. Dartmouth (6:24.120) finished behind only Princeton in its race, earning a spot in the A final at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Green will be joined in that race by Princeton, Washington, Georgetown, Florida Tech and Harvard, each of whom advanced from their semifinal races.
