Day Two of IRA Championship Comes to a Close

Two Boats Advance to Grand Finals on Sunday
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — Day two of the IRA National Championship was a bit of a rollercoaster ride for the Dartmouth heavyweights. The second and third varsity boats finished in the top three of their respective semifinals to advance to Sunday's grand final, but the varsity finished just out of medal contention with a fourth-place finish in their semifinal.
Meanwhile, the varsity four completed its run at the championship with a sixth-place finish in the grand final.
Yale took first in the V8 race, while a resurgent Syracuse boat edged out Brown that left the Big Green in fourth. The top three boats advanced to the grand final while Dartmouth and the others will compete at 10:40 a.m. on Sunday in the petite final.
The second varsity boat, which had the fastest heat time in the race for the Kennedy Cup, advanced to the Grand Final with a third-place finish. Eastern Sprints winner Yale showed it hasn't lost a stroke, taking the top spot. Just like the varsity eight, the second varsity had to contend with a tough Syracuse boat but managed to hold on and finish ahead of the Orangemen. The race for the championship is scheduled for 10 a.m.
In the third varsity race Dartmouth, Harvard and Brown were neck-and-neck from the start before the Crimson used 39 strokes per minute to establish a lead they would not relinquish. With 750m to go, Brown was firmly in control of second place. Boston University made a late charge and cut Dartmouth's lead to a few seats before the Green buckled down and staved off the Terriers to qualify for tomorrow's grand final. Race time is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
