THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth field hockey team is set to open its season this weekend as the Big Green play at No. 22 Maine on Friday before facing Quinnipiac in a neutral-site contest in Orono on Saturday. Game times are set for 3 and 2 p.m., respectively, with Friday's game to air on ESPN3. Dartmouth will be eyeing a second straight season-opening victory after beginning last season with a 2-1 shootout win at UC Davis.
LAST SEASON
Dartmouth finished last season 4-13, but six of the losses were by two goals or fewer, including four one-goal defeats. The Big Green began the season 3-2, with wins over UC Davis (shootout), Central Michigan and Bryant — all via a 2-1 final. A 5-0 victory over Merrimack improved Dartmouth's record to 4-3. The Big Green went on to have a number of close calls the rest of the way, including 2-1 Ivy League defeats versus Columbia and at Penn.
DEFENSE SHINES THROUGHÂ Â
Last season, Dartmouth allowed 46 goals in 17 games — its fewest goals allowed since 2012 when the Big Green also allowed 46 goals in 17 contests. Dartmouth finished last season with a 2.71 goals against average, allowing two goals or fewer eight times, one goal or fewer five times and one shutout.
SCOUTING MAINE
Ranked 22nd in the preseason national poll, Maine is 0-2 on the young season, but both losses were against ranked opponents — No. 25 UMass (4-3) in overtime and No. 1 Northwestern (5-1), with both games played in Amherst, Massachusetts. In the season opener, UMass pulled even at three via a penalty stroke before winning it 7:01 into overtime. Maine scored on three of its seven first-half shots before being held without a single shot after halftime.
The Black Bears and Wildcats were scoreless at the half on Sunday against the defending national champions, with Northwestern holding an 8-4 edge in shots. The Wildcats came out firing in the second half, though, outshooting Maine, 17-2, and outsourcing them, 5-1.
Maine is coming off its first America East Championship in program history, finishing 15-7 a season ago before losing in overtime to Miami University (Ohio) in the NCAA Tournament. Among the returning Black Bears in 2022 are America East Goalkeeper of the Year Mia Borley, leading goal scorer Poppy Lambert (17) and Chloe Walton, who posted 26 points a season ago.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE BLACK BEARS
Maine leads the all-time series against Dartmouth, 20-5. The Black Bears won last season, 3-1, in Hanover. The Big Green's last victory was in 2007 (3-2 in overtime). The teams first met in 1991, a 4-0 Maine win.
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
Quinnipiac will enter Saturday's matchup with Dartmouth 0-1 after its 3-1 season-opening defeat vs. New Hampshire. Lucia Pompeo evened the score at one less than two minutes into the second half, but the Wildcats answered in the 45th and 57th minutes for the win. Quinnipiac is coming off a 3-12 season, including 1-6 in the Big East. The Bobcats' wins came against Yale (3-2 in overtime), Villanova (5-4 in overtime) and Sacred Heart (3-0).Â
The team's leading scorer, Emilia Massarelli, returns for her sophomore campaign after garnering second team all-conference honors as a rookie. Her 10 goals and 22 points were both second in the BIG EAST. A freshman in 2022, Cristina Torres played for the U18 Spanish National Team this past summer and started the season opener against New Hampshire.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE BOBCATS
Dartmouth is 2-0 all-time against Quinnipiac, winning in 1999 (4-1) and 2000 (6-0).
WELCOME, COACHES!
This August, head field hockey coach Mark Egner announced the additions of Tanner Ridgely and Jen Callahan to his coaching staff as assistant coach and volunteer assistant, respectively. They join Maggie Reddecliff to round out the staff.
Ridgely arrives in Hanover after spending the 2021-22 academic year as a volunteer assistant coach with the Towson field hockey program. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in sport and recreation management with a minor in general business from James Madison University in 2021. While at James Madison, Ridgely spent three seasons on the field hockey team. She has also been a head coach for the Warhawks Field Hockey Club since November 2020.
Â
No stranger to the Upper Valley, Callahan brings a wealth of coaching experience to Dartmouth. After a decorated four-year playing career at the University of Vermont, she got her start in coaching at Lehigh as a graduate assistant and moved up the ranks to be the transitional head coach in early 2011. After Lehigh, Callahan took the reins of the American International College field hockey program, leading the Yellow Jackets to the semifinals of the NE10 Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament during the 2011 season. Callahan spent nearly a decade with the USA Field Hockey Futures Program and has recently served as a Lebanon recreation volunteer coach in soccer, field hockey and lacrosse. A 2009 graduate of Vermont with a bachelor's degree in elementary education, Callahan went on to receive a master's degree in teaching and learning from Lehigh in 2011. She also holds a USA Field Hockey Level II Developmental Coaching Accreditation and a USA Field Hockey Level I Coaching Accreditation.

THIRD IN THE NATION!
Last February, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced the recipients of the 2021 Division I National Academic Team Awards. Dartmouth, along with 78 other programs, were honored with the distinction, presented to programs that earn a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester of the 2021-22 school year.
Â
The Big Green's 3.76 team GPA ranked third in the entire nation and top amongst the Ivies, just beating out Brown's 3.75 team GPA.
Â
"I am in awe of this achievement by each of the athletes on our roster," said head coach Mark Egner. "For the past number of years our athletes have sustained this standard of academic success. This is something that is incredibly important as we strive to provide the premier student-athlete experience."
