ORONO, Maine – The Dartmouth field hockey team fired seven of the game's first eight shots and came ever-so close to getting on the scoreboard, but Quinnipiac scored with eight seconds left in the first quarter and went on to post all four of its goals in less than 15 minutes of game action, as the Bobcats downed the Big Green, 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Lila Browne got Dartmouth within 3-1 late in the first half, but Quinnipiac added another late-quarter goal, this one with 17 seconds remaining in the second, to regain a three-goal margin.
The Big Green bounced back in the second half to outshoot the Bobcats, 5-4, and out-corner them, 5-0.
"Similar to yesterday, we had a moment or two when we lost control of the game and let them take over, but one of the things that is really reassuring is we are finding a way to get back into games," said head coach
Mark Egner. "I think that came down to the girls taking ownership at halftime. They did a wonderful job of highlighting what we needed to improve, stepping up as a group and doing those things. The performance in the second half was completely different."
Dartmouth impressed for long stretches on Saturday, including to start the game. It led to seven first-quarter shots and five penalty corners, but Quinnipiac goalkeeper Cristina Torres made three stops. Then on the other end, the Bobcats turned their first corner into a 1-0 lead. Dartmouth defended two initial shots, one blocked and one saved by goalkeeper
Ava Carlson, but Carlson couldn't stop the third attempt.
The second quarter saw Quinnipiac goals in the 21st and 26th minutes, but less than 90 seconds later, Dartmouth got on the board as
Holley Cromwell made a feed into the circle and Browne immediately rocketed it past Torres to pull the Big Green within 3-1.
The Bobcats took momentum right back, however, with a highlight-reel goal with 17 seconds left in the first half.
Dartmouth regrouped in the second and controlled play for much of the time, but wasn't able to finish. Included was a stretch of four consecutive corners (in just 23 seconds) early in the third. The Big Green went on to hold a 4-1 edge in third-quarter shots and 5-4 advantage in fourth-quarter shots.
For the game, Quinnipiac held a slim 14-13 advantage in shots while Dartmouth held a 10-2 edge in penalty corners. Making her first-career start, Carlson made six saves in goal, as did Torres.
Dartmouth will now shift focus to its home opener in just two days as the Big Green welcome Providence at 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
