Big Green Drop Tight 3-2 Final to Providence in Home Opener

The back-and-forth game wasn’t decided until the final four minutes of regulation
HANOVER, N.H. – After falling behind 1-0 early in the second quarter, the Dartmouth field hockey team scored two straight to take a 2-1 lead late into the third, but Providence pulled even at the 41:22 mark and scored the game-winner at 56:42 to spoil the Big Green's home opener, 3-2, on Monday at Chase Field. Dartmouth's goals came from Lila Browne, her second straight game with a goal, and Myah Pease. The Big Green remain home on Friday to host Northeastern at 3 p.m.
"Going into the last quarter, we really felt we could win it," said head coach Mark Egner. "The girls did a wonderful job today tightening up on some of the things from the weekend. We wanted to improve our energy as a team, but also improve ourselves in defensive transition and I think the team really did that. To get some goals, get some opportunities and get some penalty corners were all signs we're moving in the right direction."
Holly Cromwell fired the game's first shot in the game's fifth minute, which was turned aside by Providence goalkeeper Asia Porter. The Dartmouth defense held the Friars without a shot until the 10:56 mark, when they fired three in the matter of seconds, but Big Green goalkeeper Ava Carlson turned them all aside.
Providence opened the scoring just 2:02 into the second quarter off a penalty corner. Carlson stopped two initial opportunities before Sophia Pompeo's chance found the back of the cage. Dartmouth defender Helen Young nearly made a tremendous play knocking it out of mid-air, but the ball ricocheted over the goal line.
Later in the quarter, the Big Green pulled even off a corner as well, as Bronwyn Bird made a feed towards the back post, and Browne did the rest to pull Dartmouth even at the half.
Final shots were 15-10 in favor of Providence while the Big Green held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners. Carlson finished with eight saves in a strong performance, while Porter made two for the Friars.
"I think [the process] is one of the most important things and something that's really special about working at a place like this is we can appreciate the process," said Egner. "Even in our postgame conversation, the girls were talking to themselves about how much they feel growth. They see where we're going and they're excited about it. If we keep this going in the right direction over the next few weeks, I think there are big things to come for this team."
The Big Green return home this weekend for two games, as they host Northeastern on Friday at 3 p.m. and Sacred Heart on Sunday at 12 p.m. with both games to be streamed on ESPN+.

The third quarter saw a pair of penalty stroke goals, one for each side, as Pease scored her second of the season at 34:27 and Lisa McNamara also converted at the 41:22 mark.GOAL, Dartmouth! Dartmouth came out strong in the fourth and had plenty of sustained pressure. One of its best chances all game came off the stick of Boau-Lilly Shepherd, whose high shot hit off the post and stayed out. However, Providence went on to score the game-winner at 56:42 as Pompeo centered to Ally DeCoste, who gave the Friars a 3-2 lead. That proved to be the final.Two penalty stroke goals in the third, one from each side. Dartmouth's came off the stick of Myah Pease. We head to the fourth tied at two!
