NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Freshman Lucia Campaño scored for the fourth time this season, all coming in the last seven games, but Yale evened the score in the third quarter then won it 2:32 into overtime, defeating the Dartmouth field hockey team, 2-1 on Friday evening. Sophomore
Ava Carlson made six saves in goal, but it wasn't enough.
With the loss, the Big Green fall to 4-7 and 1-4 in the Ivy League. Yale improves to 5-8 and 2-3 in the league.
"We knew today was going to be a tough Ivy League game with a lot on the line," said Dartmouth head coach
Mark Egner. "Coming into the game, we identified some work-ons for ourselves in preparation. In a lot of those areas, we performed at a level we wanted to see. Unfortunately, sport often comes down to fine margins, and today, Yale found the breakthrough moment."
A defensive first quarter saw Yale own a 3-1 edge in shots, with Carlson making the game's only save. The Big Green turned the tables in the second half, holding a 3-2 edge in shots, which included the only two shots on goal. One of them went in as Campaño made a deflection of a
Bronwyn Bird feed towards the cage, past Yale goalkeeper Luanna Summer to give Dartmouth a 1-0 lead.
That score stood until 3:01 into the third quarter, as the Bulldogs finished a direct shot off a penalty corner.
Yale held a 4-0 edge in shots in both the third and fourth quarters, with Carlson standing tall in making five second-half saves to help send the game to overtime.
Bird fired the first shot of overtime, 2:09 into the extra session, but just 23 seconds later, Poppy Beales put home a centering feed to give the Bulldogs the win.
Final shots were 14-5 in favor of Yale while the Bulldogs held a 6-0 edge in penalty corners. Carlson's six saves came across Summer, who made one.
"I think there were some really strong performances today, some nice passages of play and a lot to be optimistic about," said Egner. "We need to get ourselves back on track tomorrow and set ourselves up for Sunday."
The Big Green return to action on Saturday at Sacred Heart, in a game that will also be played at Yale's Johnson Field. Gametime is set for 4 p.m. on NEC Front Row.
