HANOVER, N.H. —
Sarah Young and Ben Sheppard have been selected to compete at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) 2023 Fall National Championships, as announced earlier this week. Young will be competing in the national championships for a third straight year as an at-large selection, while Sheppard makes the cut in his first collegiate season. Both the Open and Women Singlehanded National Championships will be be hosted by Tulane University on November 11-12 in New Orleans, Louisiana.Â
Young is one of 12 at-large selections for the women while Sheppard is one of 12 at-large selections for open. They will be joined by six conference champions who earned automatic bids for both women and open, respectively.
Earlier in the fall at Brown, Young competed at the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship regatta, finishing fifth in a field of 10. Sheppard finished sixth out of 35.
To be eligible for the national championships, candidates must have competed in a corresponding Conference Championship in any ICSA conference. Selectors must honor the finishing order at any respective conference championship; to select the fourth-place sailor in a conference, they must also select the second and third place candidates.
Criteria for selection at the Open Singlehanded and Women's Singlehanded include performances at ICSA Single and Doublehanded regattas throughout each candidate's ICSA career. For the Match Race selection process, performances in Match Race and Doublehanded ICSA regattas throughout each candidate's career are considered. For all three nationals, non-ICSA events and geographic distribution is not to be considered.
