AMHERST, Mass. — Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Dartmouth field hockey team doubled up No. 19 UMass in second-half shots, but couldn't get one past Minutewomen goalkeeper Brooke Richards in a 3-0 loss on Sunday afternoon. Among the Big Green's best second-half chances saw senior
Bronwyn Bird go coast-to-coast through the UMass defense, but her shot in the circle was saved by Richards.
With the win, the Minutewomen improves to 11-6 on the season. Dartmouth falls to 5-9 ahead of the season finale on Saturday vs. Columbia.
"Playing two games against top opposition back-to-back, we knew this was going to be a tough weekend," said Big Green head coach
Mark Egner. "UMass's off ball movement caused us some trouble throughout the game. In the moments we didn't close them down, they capitalized."
No shots were taken until almost seven minutes into the game. Sophomore goalkeeper
Ava Carlson stopped Dempsey Campbell's shot at the 6:54 mark, but Campbell's opportunity 13 seconds later found the back of the net for a 1-0 UMass lead. The first quarter ended with the Minutewomen holding a 6-0 edge in shots, with Carlson making four saves to keep the deficit at one.
Late in the second quarter, UMass doubled its lead as Alexa Collins made a tip into the top left corner of the cage with 5:21 on the clock.
Dartmouth came out strong in the second half, firing three shots in the span of 59 seconds early in the stanza, including the last two on goal. In the 33rd minute, sophomore
Olivia Galiotos' shot was saved by Richards, then senior
Lila Browne batted the rebound towards goal where Josie Rossbach came up with a big defensive stop to keep the Big Green off the board.
"At times, we generated our own opportunities and in those moments, we looked quite dangerous," said Egner. "If we can finish those chances, maybe it's a different game."
With three minutes left in the third quarter, the Minutewomen took a 3-0 advantage off a penalty corner. They then tallied the first shot of the fourth, but the Big Green held UMass shotless for the final 9:04, while recording three themselves. All three were by Bird, the last coming off a penalty corner with 4:30 remaining.
UMass finished with a 15-8 edge in shots while the Minutewomen had a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners. Carlson finished with six saves across Richards, who made three.
The Big Green are set to return home for their final game of the season, hosting Columbia on Saturday at 12 p.m. on Senior Day.
"With one more game to go, we need to find our focus again and finish on a high note," said Egner.
