Dartmouth took gold in the men’s club fours and bronze in the men’s club eights

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Dartmouth men's heavyweight rowing team opened its season this weekend with an impressive performance at the Head of the Charles in Boston. The weekend began with the Big Green taking first place out of 53 crews in the men's club fours, before capturing bronze in the club eights.

"The team put together a good weekend," said Wyatt Allen, Betsy and Mark Gates 1959 Head Coach of Men's Heavyweight Rowing. "We've had a productive fall. I thought our guys did a good job of rallying and putting together good lineups and good pieces on the race course. We showed that we're in the mix. We're not where we want to be, but we're within striking distance and the whole group is excited to get back to work."

The club fours started the weekend by posting a time of 16:01.965 over the three-mile race, finishing over 12 seconds ahead of any of the other 52 crews. Purdue came in second with a time of 16:14.094.

Not long after, the club eights medaled as well, finishing third with a time of 14:29.106. Brown came in first (14:13.412), while the Big Green held off Boston University, who posted a time of 14:31.495.

The weekend concluded with the championship eights on Sunday, as Dartmouth's "A" boat came in ninth out of 27 crews, posting a time of 14:43.132. A tight field saw the Big Green less than 22 seconds out of first and less than 16 seconds from medaling. Dartmouth's "B" boat finished in 22nd with a time of 15:17.704.

"It was really cool to see Jack [Smith] coach the four, and they won. Sabrina [Bohrer] coached the club eight and they got third and medalled," said Allen. "It was awesome to see them have some success in their first coaching outings [at Dartmouth], seeing how the men and women have rallied around them and enjoyed working with them.

"A lot of positives out of the weekend."

The Big Green return to action on Saturday at home for the Gardner Cup.
