POTSDAM, N.Y. – With time running down,
Sean Chisholm scored on the power play to tie the game with 1:25 remaining in the third period as the Dartmouth men's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against Clarkson in ECAC Hockey action on Saturday evening at Cheel Arena. The Golden Knights won the shootout, 1-0, to take the extra point in the standings.
Â
Dartmouth moves to 2-3-4 overall and 2-1-4 in the league. Clarkson now sits at 7-5-1 with a 4-1-1 record in conference play.
Â
"I thought it was our best 5-on-5 game of the year," said
Reid Cashman, the Koenig Family Head Coach of Dartmouth Men's Hockey. "I was really proud of the way our guys competed. I thought special teams, PK struggled early, but to come out in the third and win a third period, get a five-minute kill, and get the power play equalizer; I think there's a ton to build off of and a ton of growth."
Â
Shortly after the Big Green killed off a five-minute major late in the third period, Clarkson took a five-minute major of their own to send Dartmouth on the power play. The Big Green took advantage however, as Chisholm found the breakthrough after numerous attempts were turned away by Golden Knights goaltender Austin Roden. Dartmouth pulled
Cooper Black in favor of the extra attacker, and just 27 seconds later, Chisholm fired home his first goal of the season to tie the game.
Ian Pierce and
John Fusco picked up the assists on the play.
Â
Dartmouth had jumped out an early 1-0 lead inside the opening four minutes of the contest, as
Cooper Flinton tallied his third goal of the year. A Clarkson turnover in the neutral zone allowed
Nikita Nikora to quickly play the puck to
Luke Haymes. Haymes took advantage of the space in front of him before making the back door pass to Flinton, who was in a perfect position to tap home the shot into the back of the net.
The Golden Knights evened the score midway through the first period when Ryan Richardson scored a power play goal at the 12:127 mark. They took the lead late in the opening period when Eric Ciccolini scored his third goal of the season.
The Big Green outshot the Golden Knights, 33-30. Additionally, Dartmouth hit the pipe on four occasions.
Â
Black 28 stops on the night while Roden made 31 saves.
Â
Dartmouth heads across the country next weekend to close out the seven-game road stretch, taking on Arizona State for a pair of non-conference matchups next Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is scheduled for 9 p.m. (7 p.m. local time) while Saturday's game is slated for 7 p.m. (5 p.m. local time). Both games will be available to stream on the Pac-12 Network.
